LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The California man who made "Innocence of Muslims," a film denigrating Islam and the Prophet Muhammad, is a Coptic Christian. The film has sparked protests in the Middle East and is implicated in an attack that killed the U.S. ambassador to Libya and other Americans. Here's a look at the religion and reaction to the film:

WHO ARE COPTIC CHRISTIANS?

Coptic Christians belong to the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, the largest Christian church in Egypt. The church was founded by Saint Mark, who authored one of the gospels. The church belongs to the Oriental Orthodox family of churches, which has been a distinct church body since the Council of Chalcedon in 451, when it took a different position over Christological theology from that of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Coptic Christians comprise about 9 percent of Egypt's population. Many Egyptian Christians fled to the U.S. to escape what they say is religious discrimination in the majority Muslim nation. Coptic churches dot the American landscape, with large communities in California, New Jersey, the Midwest and Florida.

WHAT'S THEIR REACTION TO THE FILM?

His Grace Bishop Serapion of the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of Los Angeles, Southern California and Hawaii, said Thursday he doesn't support the views portrayed in the movie and he also condemned the murders of the U.S. ambassador and three others.

Serapion said in a statement that the diocese "strongly rejects dragging the respectable Copts of the Diaspora in the latest production of an inflammatory movie about the prophet of Islam. The producers of this movie should be responsible for their actions. The name of our blessed parishioners should not be associated with the efforts of individuals who have ulterior motives."

Serapion added: "Holistically blaming the Copts for the production of this movie is equivalent to holistically blaming Muslims for the actions of a few fanatics. Even though Christians often face persecution, injustice and calls for open attacks over the airwaves, we reject violence in all its forms."

The Rev. Joseph Boules, a priest at St. Mary and St. Verena Church in Anaheim, Calif., said no one in the Coptic Orthodox community knows the filmmaker and the church had nothing to do with the movie. The filmmaker could be an Egyptian Catholic or Eyptian evangelical, he said, noting that the word "Coptic" is often used in to denote Egyptian Christians from any Christian denomination.

Parishioners are worried about their security and at least one church in the nearby city of Orange on Wednesday received a visit from police officers, who advised them to keep their church locked in case of retaliation, Boules said.

South Africa mine unrest hits world No.1 platinum firm

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Labour unrest sweeping across South Africa's mining sector hit top world platinum producer Anglo American Platinum on Wednesday, with striking miners blockading roads leading to shafts belonging to the mining giant, police said.

The platinum price jumped as much as 1.5 percent to $1,624.74 an ounce, its highest since mid-April amid fears of more disruption to supplies of the precious metal used in jewelery and vehicle catalytic converters.

South Africa is home to 80 percent of known reserves. The platinum price has jumped more than 17 percent since police shot dead 34 protesters at the Marikana mine of world No. 3 platinum producer Lonmin on August 16, the bloodiest security incident since the end of apartheid in 1994.

The "Marikana massacre" has poisoned industrial relations across the mining sector and become a potent symbol of the ruling African National Congress' (ANC) failure to deliver on promises of a "better life for all" in the post-apartheid era.

The bloodshed and the government's inability to ease unrest undermining already shaky growth in Africa's biggest economy is also fuelling a campaign against President Jacob Zuma, who faces an internal ANC leadership battle in December.

"Around 1,000 mineworkers had a confrontation with mine security last night at the Siphumelele shaft and the situation has spread to other mine shafts this morning," regional police spokesman Thulani Ngubane said of the trouble at Amplats.

He declined to give any details of the size of the security operation, the latest police deployment in more than five weeks of union violence in the "platinum belt" around Rustenburg, 100 km (60 miles) northwest of Johannesburg.

Amplats' four Rustenburg mines represent almost 17 percent of total production by the company, which accounts for 40 percent of world platinum output. They employ more than 19,000 people.

"WIDESPREAD INTIMIDATION"

The strikes, which stem from a challenge by the small but militant Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) to the dominance of the ANC-affiliated National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), are also spreading into the gold sector.

The NUM said workers at the Beatrix mine, run by world No. 4 producer Gold Fields were set to strike this week, compounding wildcat industrial action this week by 15,000 workers at the company's KDC West west of Johannesburg.

ANC renegade Julius Malema - the de facto face of the unofficial 'Anybody But Zuma' rebellion in the ANC - is also fanning the flames, appearing twice at KDC to speak to striking workers. He called on Tuesday for a national mining strike.

Ministers and NUM leaders have dismissed him as an irresponsible opportunist but the expelled Youth League leader is achieving rock star status among the legions of poor whose lives have changed little in the 18 years since apartheid ended.

Amplats said miners at its Rustenburg operations were "not on strike", but said it was aware of "widespread cases of intimidation".

"We confirm that yesterday, some of our employees were unable to clock in for night shift due to fear of intimidation and threats by unidentified individuals in and around our Rustenburg operations," it said in a statement.

Siphumelele is one of four mines near Rustenburg that analysts expect to be targeted as "restructuring candidates" by Amplats parent company Anglo American.

Shares in Amplats, which has largely avoided the labour unrest this year that has hit rivals Impala Platinum and Lonmin, fell 3.75 percent. Anglo American, which owns 80 percent of Amplats, shed 3 percent.

Slain U.S. ambassador to Libya served as envoy during revolution

Chris Stevens, the U.S. ambassador to Libya killed along with three others in a rocket attack outside the American Consulate in Benghazi was "a courageous and exemplary representative of the United States," President Barack Obama said in his initial statement Wednesday condemning the attack.

Initial reports said the slain embassy staffers?who also include foreign service information management officer Sean Smith?were trying to flee the consulate building when they were fired upon by protesters apparently angry over a film they say insults Prophet Muhammad.

However, U.S. officials told The New York Times and CNN on Wednesday that the attack may have been planned by a group that "had either been waiting for an opportunity to exploit like the protests over the video or perhaps even generated the protests as a cover for their attack."

According to the Associated Press, a Libyan doctor who treated Stevens said the diplomat died of severe asphyxiation from smoke inhalation and that he tried for 90 minutes to revive him.

Stevens, 52, was the first U.S. ambassador killed in the line of duty since 1979, when Adolph Dubs, U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan, was gunned down in a kidnapping attempt.

"Throughout the Libyan revolution, [Stevens] selflessly served our country and the Libyan people at our mission in Benghazi," Obama said. "As ambassador in Tripoli, he has supported Libya's transition to democracy. His legacy will endure wherever human beings reach for liberty and justice. I am profoundly grateful for his service to my administration, and deeply saddened by this loss."

Stevens, a California native and U.C.-Berkeley grad, was a 21-year veteran of foreign service, the White House said.

"I had the privilege of swearing in Chris for his post in Libya only a few months ago," Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in a separate statement. "He spoke eloquently about his passion for service, for diplomacy and for the Libyan people. This assignment was only the latest in his more than two decades of dedication to advancing closer ties with the people of the Middle East and North Africa.

"As the conflict in Libya unfolded, Chris was one of the first Americans on the ground in Benghazi," Clinton continued. "He risked his own life to lend the Libyan people a helping hand to build the foundation for a new, free nation. He spent every day since helping to finish the work that he started. Chris was committed to advancing America's values and interests, even when that meant putting himself in danger."

In response to the attack, the United States is "deploying elite Marine counterterrorism teams to Libya," Foreign Policy reports. The Pentagon is sending Fleet Anti-Terrorism Teams, or FAST teams, a U.S. defense official told the magazine.

"It's especially tragic because Chris Stevens died in Benghazi because it is a city he fought to save," Obama said later Wednesday morning in hastily arranged public remarks in the Rose Garden of the White House.

Speaking at an impromptu press conference in Jacksonville, Fla., on Wednesday, Mitt Romney condemned Tuesday's attacks as "disgusting" and "outrageous," but he also attacked the Obama administration for standing by a statement issued by the U.S. Embassy in Cairo that he claimed was an "apology" for American values.

Late Tuesday, Romney issued a statement saying it was "disgraceful that the Obama administration's first response was not to condemn attacks on our diplomatic missions but to sympathize with those who waged the attacks." On Wednesday, he stood by his criticism of the White House.

Oil price up after attack on US consulate in Libya

Oil traded above $97 a barrel Thursday after attacks on U.S. diplomatic missions and the killing of the U.S. ambassador to Libya sparked new worries about unrest in the Middle East.

By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark crude was up 25 cents at $97.26 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 16 cents Wednesday to end at $97.01 per barrel in New York.

In London, Brent crude was down 8 cents at $115.25 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans died after an attack on the U.S. diplomatic facility in Benghazi on Tuesday. The attack in Libya came hours after a mob stormed the U.S. Embassy in Cairo and tore down the U.S. flag. On Thursday, protesters stormed the American embassy in Yemen.

Analysts said the while impact of the attacks on oil prices had been subdued thus far, risks were on the rise.

"The fact that all of this is occurring without a price impact on oil shows that a geopolitical premium is already priced in," said Olivier Jakob of Petromatrix in Switzerland. "We need however to keep in mind that due to the sanctions on Iran there is absolutely no room for another disruption in any oil producing country."

Oil analyst Stephen Schork said in an email commentary that he expects "the fundamental picture to be overtaken by the powder keg that was ignited yesterday in Libya ... we will be keeping a close eye on tension in the region."

Traders were also awaiting the end of a two-day Federal Reserve policy meeting at which central bankers were widely expected to announce new steps to help the flagging U.S. economy.

Should the Fed fail to announce the awaited measures, "we may see crude prices unwind some of their recent gains as the dollar corrects higher," said a report from Sucden Financial Research in London. A stronger dollar makes crude more expensive and a less attractive investment for traders using other currencies. Early Thursday, the euro was up to $1.2911 from $1.2900 late Wednesday in New York.

In other trading on the Nymex, heating oil fell 0.65 cents to $3.2217 per gallon. Wholesale gasoline dropped 0.76 cent to $2.994 per gallon. Natural gas lost 2 cents to $3.043 per 1,000 cubic feet.
