People with parents who were in the military have ongoing maritime asbestos lawsuits. Families and their attorneys are in pursuit of companies who produced these hazardous products that led to mesothelioma in many people. Back in the "day", people and maritime merchant marines and others did not know the dangers of these products until the effects of asbestos and poison and mesothelioma. Now, class action lawsuits are ongoing.

This is something I am familiar with, as my dad served in the merchant marines after world war 2 and before the Korean War. The naval ships would use powdered asbestos mix that were used for many things. My dad used to comment that it was like mixing a cake and he remembered breathing this in for hours, days and longer. No one bothered to question the safety of asbestos and whether mesothelioma cancer could become a problem.

Prior to the poison effects of asbestos, large companies supplied merchant marine ships and other compsnieswith this material - that we now knowwas hazerdous. My Father and others did not know this - nor did most of the ships and companies thatt were supplied. The military, including the merchant marines used these products and are suffering from cancer, lung disorders and mesothelioma.

We started getting settlement checks from law firms handling the cases against the contractors, companies and manufacturers as we have been included in several class action meso lawsuits. My father was not alive when this began. He died 2 years prior but we did not have to do anything. Maritime lawyers and firms have been handling the cases on behalf of the estates of thousands of merchant marines, navy shipmen, factory workers, ship builders and more.

There are hundreds of ongoing lawsuits and cases involving people who are sick, and the families of those who died. Some of these cases dealt with people and contractors from 60 years ago or longer. Many of these companies are out of business, bankrupt or other, so the cases may not be going anywhere in some instances.

Since asbestos was not really considered poisonous back then and since there were many variable of products used, proving liability on a company can prove a tough one. But documents still exist and meso asbestos victims are getting their restitution over time.

Thankfully, these asbestos exposure situations of putting the health and safety of our maritime servicemen and other workers will not repeat itself. It is a banned substance. Asbestos, mesothelioma and lung cancer causes have long been established as it relates to known poison materials. But, the loved ones and estates of people who died or got ill due to these asbestos poison health issues may get some justice through meso law and class action settlements.

Over last three decades, the internet has become a very risky means of communication in all sectors of daily life. American Idol Season 12 Judges Rumored To Be...

And... well... that's about all we know when it comes to American Idol Season 12.

With rumors citing everyone from Adam Lambert to Nick Jonas to Diddy as potential judges, a new report says the show has settled on the three artists it would like to sit down alongside Carey.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, producers are hoping to cover every musical gamut, from rap to country to Latin. Along those lines, its top choices would be:

• Nicki Minaj
• Keith Urban
• Enrique Igelsias

One hold-up, however, is that Minaj is the new Pepsi spokesperson and Idol is notorious for its overt advertising deal with Coca-Cola.

Moreover, this quartet would be VERY expensive. Carey is already set to earn $17 million for one year of work and luring in other major names such as the ones listed above would require individual salaries into the eight figures.

Jumping ship: The party platforms no one stands on anymore

In the furor over Todd Akin?s inventive understanding of biology, we should not lose sight of another matter. His position on abortion--that the victim of rape should be compelled to bear her rapist?s child--has been the official position of the Republican Party for more than thirty years.

Indeed, the language of the GOP platform--all but certain to be adopted in Tampa next week--goes further. It declares that: "Faithful to the 'self-evident' truths enshrined in the Declaration of Independence, we assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed.?

Taken together with its support for ?a human life amendment to the Constitution,? and for ?legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment's protections apply to unborn children," its platform calls for a ban on all abortions--even to save the life of the mother.

So why has this decades-long position triggered comparatively little political furor?

It?s simple: Nobody takes the platform of a political party seriously any longer. And that is one of the most striking, if all but ignored, changes in American political life.

For most of our history, conventions were held not only to nominate candidates, but also to debate and define what the parties stood for. The platform was a serious declaration of purpose, and the fights were hugely consequential. Candidates accepted not only their party?s nomination, but the platform as well.

Declaring the spread of slavery ?a crime against humanity?, the 1860 Republican platform defined the stakes of Lincoln?s candidacy. (The party also called on the federal government to support a railroad to the Pacific, which today?s GOP would no doubt label ?socialist.?)

The fight ?free silver? at the 1896 Democratic convention led directly to the nomination of William Jennings Bryan, and gave a populist dimension to the party. The 1924 battles over Prohibition and immigration tied Democrats in knots; it took 103 ballots to nominate its doomed candidate for President.

Then, in 1948, the Democratic Party?s embrace of a strong civil rights plank led to walkouts and the third party states. In fact, the segregationist candidacy of South Carolina Gov. Strom Thurmond carried four Southern states.

In 1964, the Republican convention?s failure to denounce extremism (including the radically right-wing John Birch Society) was a key reason why moderates and liberals (including Michigan Gov. George Romney) refused to back the candidacy of Barry Goldwater.

In 1968, the fight over the Vietnam War was both a symbol and cause of the deeply divided Democratic Party.

And today? The platform is largely regarded as a way to placate the more ideologically-fervent constituencies, without really binding the nominees to much of anything. Mitt Romney backs an exception for abortion in the case of rape, and his running mate, Paul Ryan, has recently adopted the same position. Four years ago, John McCain?s campaign made an effort to put that exemption into the platform, and then more or less shrugged off the issue.

As we?ve seen, the platform struggles go beyond abortion. In 1996, GOP nominee Bob Dole publicly rejected the platform plank that called for an end to ?birthright citizenship? for the children of illegal immigrants. Back in 1980, Jimmy Carter?s campaign allowed into the platform planks calling for increased government spending on behalf of ?full employment? as a sop to the vanquished backers of Ted Kennedy.

Why does the party platform mean so little these days? For the same reason conventions don?t nominate candidates anymore. Just as candidates for president no longer emerge from those infamous smoke-filled rooms, but spend two years traipsing across the country, the President and the party leaders in Congress argue their views in front of the whole nation. Even when a candidate tries to fudge an issue--could you give us a clue about just what loopholes you intend to close, Rep. Ryan?--there?s comparatively little need for a platform to set down what a party stands for. Anyone who cannot see the exceptionally clear divisions between Obama and Romney has simply been living off the grid.

I confess to a sense of loss at the decline of platform fights. I would have loved to have been in the galleries or the floor when a chant of ?Free and Unlimited Coinage of Silver at Sixteen-to-One!? erupted from the hall.

Of course, I?m still waiting for the chance to analyze potential vote-switches as a second-ballot draws near.

Jennifer Benka: Poetry in Motion | Lambda Literary

?I am personally interested in exploring the possibilities of poetry?to counter rhetoric, reinvigorate language, and uplift the material of the everyday.?

Jennifer?Benka, the new Executive Director of the Academy of American Poets, is queer, political, and has?pretty awesome taste in music. Having?served as Managing Director of Poets & Writers for almost a decade and, most recently, as the National Director of Development and Marketing for 826 National, she?s also an accomplished writer in her own right. She holds a BA in Journalism from Marquette University, an MFA in Creative Writing-Poetry from The New School, and is the author of?two books of poetry:?Pinko?(Hanging Loose Press) and?A Box of Longing With Fifty Drawers?(Soft Skull Press). Lambda Literary had the chance to ask her some questions just after her official start at the?Academy.

What would you say is the guiding mission of the Academy of American Poets?

The mission of the Academy of American Poets is to support poets in the U.S. at all stages of their careers and to foster the appreciation of contemporary poetry. The organization accomplishes this by administering nearly 200 College Prizes to budding poets at schools across the country as well as seven major awards for poets?from a first-book prize through a lifetime achievement award. Our website Poets.org is full of excellent biographical information about poets, thousands of poems, and offers an Online Poetry Classroom, which provides free poetry lesson plans and other tools for teachers. The site also houses the Poetry Audio Archive, a collection of nearly 500 recordings dating back to the 1960s of poets reading their work. And, in April 1996, the Academy launched what is now the largest literary celebration in the world, National Poetry Month.

Do you see yourself expanding on that mission?

I think we will be innovating new ways to deliver on that mission. The Academy of American Poets was founded by a visionary 23-year-old woman, Marie Bullock, who believed that poetry was underappreciated in the U.S. and that poets here should have more opportunities to be celebrated for their art. That was 78 years ago, and while the Academy has been the leading organization during the past seven decades advocating for poetry to have a meaningful location in American culture, it?s clear we must continue to make this case.

Given the long history of queer writers, and queer poets in particular, it feels quite vital to have a queer woman as the Academy?s new Executive Director. Can you speak a bit to the relationship between poetry and queerness for you personally?

This is obviously a subject that deserves much more than I might offer here. But, I am reminded in this moment of something Minnie Bruce Pratt said at a National Outwrite Conference in the early 1990s. She noted that (and I am paraphrasing from memory) ?queer? descended etymologically from an idea of ?outsider.? She suggested poetry, too, has had outsider status and that we gain a particular sensitivity living and creating at the margins. And this is true of course for LGBT writers and also writers of color and working class writers. One has, perhaps, a different relationship to language when it has been used to isolate and divide one?s community, to oppress, or enforce powerlessness.

I am personally interested in exploring the possibilities of poetry?to counter rhetoric, reinvigorate language, and uplift the material of the everyday. To help us understand ourselves by translating and communicating experience and deep emotion. To help us envision new ways of being and new worlds. To say what has been unsaid. I?m interested in poetry as a means to transfer knowledge and as a place to conceptualize freedom, as well as beauty.

How do you think your work as a poet informs your work as an administrator??

I have always been dually serious about my creative life and my work in nonprofit management. I feel absolutely fortunate to be working at an organization that speaks to both of my passions and to get up in the morning to go serve poetry. Being a part of the poetry community personally as a writer and an events organizer has given me an appreciation of the breadth of our community. Adrienne Rich, in a 2006 interview with the Guardian, said, ?There is no universal Poetry, anyway, only poetries and poetics, and the streaming, intertwining histories to which they belong.? I am looking forward to meeting and working with poets, readers, and educators working in and celebrating the range of our art form.

?and any current influences?

I have recently returned but yet one more time to Muriel Rukeyser?s collection of essays The Life of Poetry (Paris Press), which offers insight into the resistance to poetry in the U.S. and also articulates an aspirational case for the art form. Simply put, Rukeyser believes people want poetry. She writes: ?We wish to be told, in the most memorable way, what we have been meaning all along.?

I read broadly and, fortunately, as I step into this job, the diversity of the Academy?s Chancellors speaks to my interests: Victor Hern?ndez Cruz, Toi Derricotte, Mark Doty, Marilyn Hacker, Lyn Hejinian, Juan Felipe Herrera, Edward Hirsch, Jane Hirshfield, Naomi Shihab Nye, Sharon Olds, Ron Padgett, Carl Phillips, Marie Ponsot, Arthur Sze, and Anne Waldman.

Of the Academy?s current programming (Poem-A-Day, National Poetry Month, Poets Forum, etc.), what?s your favorite?

I think all of the Academy?s programs present unique and very interesting opportunities to learn more about and engage with poetry. On October 18 ? 20 we will be holding our annual Poets Forum in New York City. The event explores contemporary poetry and features panel discussions, readings, and walking tours.
