Man files suit against Bristol Palin, TV network

(AP) ? A Los Angeles man who launched an expletive-laden tirade against Sarah Palin's daughter, Bristol, has filed a lawsuit against the Lifetime Network alleging he was taped for her reality show without his knowledge or consent.

In a federal lawsuit filed Wednesday, Stephen Hanks seeks general and punitive damages, saying he's a victim of defamation and invasion of privacy after video aired of the heated confrontation.

Hanks alleges he wasn't told the film crew at a West Hollywood bar in September was shooting footage for the reality show "Bristol Palin: Life's a Tripp."

The show will follow the single mother for 14 half-hour episodes and begins airing next week.

In recently released video from the upcoming show, Hanks heckles Bristol Palin while watching her ride a mechanical bull at the bar, yelling out, "Your mother's a whore."

After Palin confronted the man over the insult, their conversation grew heated and he called the 21-year-old "white trash from Wasilla."

In the lawsuit, Hanks alleges that Palin also defamed him in a magazine and called him a homosexual.

On her blog, Palin complained about bullying when recalling the incident, saying "a guy started yelling at me and called my mom terrible names, but couldn't tell me one decent reason why he was filled with such hate."

Lifetime representatives declined comment on the case, saying they do not comment on pending litigation.

The show is set to premiere Tuesday at 10 p.m. EDT.

BRUSH STROKES Artist and lecturer Richard CrossBRUSH STROKES Artist and lecturer Richard Cross

AN art lecturer has pulled off a master-stroke by securing a place at a coveted exhibition.

Working artist and Blackburn College lecturer Richard Cross has landed a spot in the world?s largest contemporary art show the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.

Richard?s oil painting Thin Red Line is now going to be one of the pieces that have made it into the exhibition, which has displayed works from famous artists such as Tracey Emin.

His painting is part of a series of landscapes based on the area of Lancashire where he lives and works. More than 11,000 artists vied for a place at the exhibition.

Richard?s work will be hung in Gallery V, which focuses particularly on landscape pieces.

Richard, from Clitheroe, has a studio in Blackburn town centre and has previously had works displayed in the Royal Overseas League, Laing Art Competition, Northern Young Contemporaries, and exhibitions at Christies and the Royal Festival Hall in London.

A teacher of fine Art and Drawing at the College for over 20 years, he said: ?I?m thrilled to be included the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.

?The subject of this painting is the place I regularly go to walk my dog and is just outside of Clitheroe.

?The ?Thin Red Line? refers to the rust coloured side of the Manchester to Clitheroe railway line that cuts across the picture in front of Longridge Fell and Kemple End in the background.

?I work full-time therefore I?m not under any particular pressure to sell work, I only paint places I?m very familiar with and that I encounter as part of my everyday routine. If people like them that?s a bonus.?

Richard?s work has also appeared in the ?500 Portraits? book which celebrated 25 years of the National Portrait Gallery?s annual BP Portrait Award.

The portrait of himself was one of 50 selected from over 3,000 entries to appear in the book.

Principal, Ian Clinton, said: ?This is a very significant achievement for Richard and the college.

"It highlights the very high calibre of our tutors.?

The Summer Exhibition is open until August 12.

10,000 germ species live in and on healthy people

WASHINGTON (AP) ? They live on your skin, up your nose, in your gut ? enough bacteria, fungi and other microbes that collected together could weigh, amazingly, a few pounds.

Now scientists have mapped just which critters normally live in or on us and where, calculating that healthy people can share their bodies with more than 10,000 species of microbes.

Don't say "eeew" just yet. Many of these organisms work to keep humans healthy, and results reported Wednesday from the government's Human Microbiome Project define what's normal in this mysterious netherworld.

One surprise: It turns out that nearly everybody harbors low levels of some harmful types of bacteria, pathogens that are known for causing specific infections. But when a person is healthy ? like the 242 U.S. adults who volunteered to be tested for the project ? those bugs simply quietly coexist with benign or helpful microbes, perhaps kept in check by them.

The next step is to explore what doctors really want to know: Why do the bad bugs harm some people and not others? What changes a person's microbial zoo that puts them at risk for diseases ranging from infections to irritable bowel syndrome to psoriasis?

Already the findings are reshaping scientists' views of how people stay healthy, or not.

"This is a whole new way of looking at human biology and human disease, and it's awe-inspiring," said Dr. Phillip Tarr of Washington University at St. Louis, one of the lead researchers in the $173 million project, funded by the National Institutes of Health.

"These bacteria are not passengers," Tarr stressed. "They are metabolically active. As a community, we now have to reckon with them like we have to reckon with the ecosystem in a forest or a body of water."

And like environmental ecosystems, your microbial make-up varies by body part. Consider your underarm a rainforest.

Scientists have long known that the human body coexists with trillions of germs, what they call the microbiome. But they didn't know which microbes lived where in healthy people, and what they actually do. Some 200 scientists from 80 research institutions worked together for five years on this first-ever census to begin answering those questions. The results were published Wednesday in a series of reports in the journals Nature and the Public Library of Science.

Storage Options pads out its budget ICS slate lineup by two

storage-options-adds-two-new-slates

We know, we know. More Android tablets. But if you're in the UK and looking for a budget Ice Cream Sandwich slate with reasonable specs, you might want to listen up -- Storage Options has added two Android 4.0 tablets to its already-crowded lineup. The 8-inch Scroll Engage, at £130 ($200), slots between the existing 7-inch Excel and 9.7-inch Extreme models, with the same Cortex A8 1.2GHz processor and 1024 x 768 resolution. However, the eight-incher packs new Mali-400 dual-core graphics and doubles the RAM to 1GB. The bigger 9.7-inch Elite matches these, but totes a larger IPS panel at the same resolution, alongside 16GB of storage -- twice the amount found on the existing Extreme. A slightly heftier £200 ($305) price tag seems to be the only other difference between the two tablet siblings. So, before ponying up those pounds sterling, hit up the sources to suss out all your options.

Marine parade in San Clemente: Arrive early, organizers say

Organizers of Thursday's parade in San Clemente to welcome the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment back from Afghanistan have a word of advice for spectators: Arrive early, because downtown parking will be hard to find.

The parade starts at 10 a.m., but Avenida Del Mar and the 100 block of Avenida Cabrillo will be blocked off from 6 a.m. to noon, which will create a crimp not only for parade spectators but for people arriving to work at downtown businesses and for potential shoppers.

Marines play volleyball as San Clemente and the Chamber of Commerce put on a picnic Friday at Camp Pendleton to honor the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, fresh off deployment to Afghanistan. San Clemente will host a downtown parade Thursday to welcome the troops home.

Also, El Camino Real between Avenida Palizada and Avenida Presidio will be closed from 9 a.m. to noon.

See a map of the parade route at right.

Wayne Eggleston, a former San Clemente mayor who is chief organizer of the parade, advises people to arrive early to await the parade.

Eggleston said he is expecting up to 700 Marines from the 2/4, plus the 1st Marine Division band, members of the?2/4 Association and city officials. They will proceed from the top of Avenida Del Mar down to Park Semper Fi at 106 Alameda Lane for an 11 a.m. ceremony with music by the Marine band. Park Semper Fi overlooks the San Clemente Pier and is home to the city's Marine Monument.

SEE A SLIDESHOW HERE OF A BARBECUE HONORING THE 2/4 AT CAMP PENDLETON.

Eggleston said the parade is a chance for the public to let the returning Marines know they are appreciated. San Clemente "adopted" the 2/4 in 1996.

Eggleston appeared before the City Council at its meeting Tuesday night, saying he hopes local businesses will let employees take time off to line the sidewalks for the parade. He also has approached principals at local schools about letting students miss class to attend.

"It's something we want to bring everybody in San Clemente out for," Eggleston said.
