Dr. Besser's 3 Tips to Ride Hurricane Sandy Out Safely

For those in the path of Hurricane Sandy, the wind, rain, floods and potential blackouts are on the way.

If you are sheltered in place with adequate food, water, batteries and other supplies, you are likely to be well-prepared for the approaching weather threat. However, there are some simple mistakes that many people make that can potentially put their family?s?health in danger.

As former head of emergency response and preparedness for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ABC News Chief Health and Medical Editor Dr. Richard Besser is familiar with many of these preparedness missteps. Below he offers three simple tips to keep you, your family ? and even your pets ? safe.

Tip #1: In an Outage, Approach Perishable Food With Caution

When the power goes out, that food in the fridge will last only so long. You should throw away any perishable food in there if your power has been off for four hours or more.

Your freezer, if full and left unopened, will keep frozen food safe for 48 hours. You must cut this safe window in half to 24 hours, however, if your freezer is only half full. But keep in mind that this is only if you keep that freezer door shut. Every time you open it, some of the cold air escapes ? effectively speeding up the clock for when your food might spoil.

Beyond these guidelines, exercise common sense. Does your food have an unusual texture, odor or color? Throw it away. This is when the old rule, ?When in doubt, throw it out,? should be in full effect.

To learn more, check out these tips from the CDC.

Tip #2: Use Generators Carefully

In a blackout, many view generators as a lifesaver. But use them improperly, and they can actually put your life in danger.

The reason for this is that generators, as they run, emit a gas known as carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is both colorless and odorless ? in other words, it is impossible for us to detect it on our own. Yet, each year carbon monoxide poisoning sends approximately 15,000 Americans to the emergency department and kills nearly 500, according to CDC statistics.

To keep you and those who live with you safe, never use a generator inside your home or garage. This rule applies even if the windows and doors are open. Nor should your generator be located right outside your residence; make sure that it is located 20 or more feet away from your home?s doors and windows. Additionally, make sure that you have carbon monoxide monitors ? battery-powered or with a battery backup ? near every sleeping area in your home.

For more, check out this CDC fact sheet.

Tip #3: Protect Those Less Able to Protect Themselves

In times of disaster, communities usually come together to make sure that everyone makes it through safe. This is a helpful ethic to promote in your own community, and it often saves the lives of those most vulnerable.

If you know or live close to someone who is elderly, has special needs or is homebound, check in on them. Make sure that they, too, have what they need in terms of shelter, food, water and warmth. This is also a good time to check in with institutions where elderly family members or others may be staying. Make sure that you are aware of any emergency measures that are being put into place and understand what is needed of you.

Last but not least, make sure that your pets are safe and secure. Many shelters will not take pets in the event of an emergency, so it is up to you to protect them by checking with your local authorities to find what pet shelters are available.

Get An iPhone 5 That Looks Like Unicorn Poop For Only $1700

colorware-iphone-5-xlApple only offers its iPhone 5 in sober black or white/gray, and while I respect their minimalist design sensibilities, some people might want more color options for their smartphone companion. Well, if you're willing to pay more than double the asking price of the unlocked 16GB iPhone 5, you can get whatever color iPhone you want, along with the ability to mix and match for freakish results.

We've stopped calling weeks like these "big" because that gives them too much credit for essentiallly trying to destroy us, from a journlistic perspective, without actually destroying us. From now on we're only calling weeks "big" if they include the singularity or a human massacre in Pittsburgh, thank you very much.

91% Holy Motors

"Holy Motors," from French filmmaker Leos Carax, is the best avant-garde film of 2012 so far. But that's not saying much, as it's been a terrible year for avant-garde film. Despite its title, "Holy Motors" really isn't about cars. It's somewhat about technology, with limousines probably meant to represent traditional celluloid cameras -- so big and bulky that they are a challenge to handle. But oh so wonderful. Big wonderful machines. Stretch limos can barely turn a corner in the old sectors of great cities like Paris and New York. But doesn't everyone's heart skip a beat just a bit when they enter one? First and foremost, "Holy Motors" is about people, as was the case with Carax's first film, "Boy Meets Girl" (1984). This is an avant-garde artist with a deep-feeling heart and a deep sensitivity to the people around him. Holy Love. Amen to that. The film documents a day in the life of a man named Oscar. (Perhaps this is a tribute to American cinema and its big, grand Academy Awards. Holy Glamour.) Played spectacularly well by the protean Denis Lavant, Oscar is carted around all day in a white stretch limo, taken to a series of appointments throughout Paris. At each appointment, he becomes a different character. His limo is a dressing room, where he applies make-up and elaborate disguises to become his next character. The first one is an old, crippled woman begging for money on the street. Another is a revolting barefoot troll (half-man, half-beast) who interrupts a high-fashion photo shoot and kidnaps the model (who is played by Eva Mendes). Every sequence is quite thrilling, and each one is so different from the others. Most breathtaking of all is the sequence where his movements are recorded in a stop-motion studio, for use in what appears to be a pornographic video game. Gradually it becomes clear that these appointments are elaborately planned, and everyone he interacts with during each scene is also an actor. While donning his next costume in the limo, he is also reading a file that someone else has prepared, a summary of what his next character will be doing. We even meet a man who appears to be something like Oscar's employer, who critiques Oscar's performances. Oscar announces that he has been having more difficulty staying in character because the cameras have gotten so small that they cannot be seen. This is when "Holy Motors" started to seem like a comment on digital filmmaking. At my screening at the New York Film Festival, Carax was in attendance, as was Kylie Minogue, who has a small role in the film. (I initially thought this was Minogue's first time acting. But not so. She has appeared in a number of television shows and films, including "Moulin Rouge," where she played the Green Fairy. Who knew?) Carax spoke for about a half-hour after the screening, and it became even more clear that "Holy Motors" was primarily meant as an allegory about 21st-century filmmaking and the demise of traditional cameras. At one point, he said the new cameras today are not really cameras. "They're more like computers," he said. He feels sad about the rise of digital filmmaking, claiming that it "looks terrible." But "Holy Motors," which was shot 100% on digital, looked gorgeous. Gradually during his remarks, the object of his ire shifted. What really angers him is that he's been unable to make a film since 1999. He had several projects collapse at the last minute because producers won't back him. This has nothing to do with the 21st century or changing technology. This is the age-old problem of cinema being enormously expensive. If anything, it's gotten easier in the digital age because the new technology costs so much less. It's no surprise to me that Carax finally was able to get a project green-lighted now that digital has triumphed. To me, Carax has digital to thank. Furthermore, I suspect that "Holy Motors" is going to succeed well enough financially that he's going to get another project green-lighted in 2013. Holy Digital. While I appreciate Carax's work and consider myself a fan, I wouldn't put him in my pantheon. There's something still just a bit underwhelming about his work.

How Cramped Must This iPad Mini Bluetooth Keyboard Be?

If you're using a touchscreen device for any kind of serious work, a physical keyboard is a must-have accessory. It's no different for the new iPad mini, although at just 7.78-inches wide when used in landscape mode, this new Bluetooth keyboard case from Zagg is probably going to feel a little cramped. More »

Words that are Speaking to Me ? TWO WRITING TEACHERS

Back on the rez, I was a decent player, I guess. A rebounder and a guy who could run up and down the floor without tripping. But something magical happened to me when I went to Reardan.

Overnight, I became a good player.

I suppose it had something to do with confidence. I mean, I?d always been the lowest Indian on the totem pole ? I wasn?t expected to be good, so I wasn?t. But in Reardan, my coach and the other players wanted me to be good. They needed me to be good. They expected me to be good. And so I became good.

I wanted to live up to expectations.

I guess that?s what it comes down to.

The power of expectations.

And as they expected more of me, I expected more of myself, and it just grew and grew?

How to Develop a Real Estate Mobile Marketing Strategy | Realty ...

Real estate agents are always looking for new ways to market themselves. It?s a simple fact of the matter that as an agent, it?s up to you to make sure people know how to reach you and can get the information on you and your properties, so you can keep selling and making your money. It?ll be welcome news, then, to find out that you can be taking advantage of the widely-growing mobile market, maximizing your exposure and quite possibly selling more properties in the process. People use their mobile phones more and more, and you can be engaging with your clients ? both current and potential ? by reaching out to them via a device that literally goes with them everywhere. By putting yourself in the pockets of those who are looking to buy real estate, you can make sure that your business is the most visible one out there, and what you?ll have to do to achieve this will cost you little to nothing in the long run.

The very first aspect of mobile marketing is as simple as making sure your current marketing assets are able to be viewed with a mobile device. If you?re doing things right you?ve got an email list already set up (if you?re not, start one ? gather all your clients? emails, put email capture lists at every open house or even, and have an info grab on your website). Now, all you?ve got to do is make sure that the emails you?re sending out are readily viewed on a smartphone or mobile device. If you?re using mostly just text, then you?ll be OK. If your email is HTML heavy on the HTML, take the proper steps to make sure that everything you send out can be properly taken in.

To this effect, you can also capture mobile numbers for text message alerts if your clients and customers are comfortable with giving you this information. Depending on how heavy you want to go with a marketing plan like this, you can do a variety of things that your clients might really love. You can send out alerts when there?s a special sale, event, or piece of information your clientele should know about. Pictures and videos of homes can also be sent, making it that much easier for you to show people around your properties without forcing anybody to make a drive.

With all of the cases and cell phone screen protectors available, it?s become obvious that people are using their smartphones and mobile devices more and more. By making sure that your marketing assets are mobile device-friendly and reaching out to your clientele on their mobile devices, you can really make sure that your marketing strategy is top-notch. Even in a down economy, people are more willing to spend their money when they feel a personal connection. Reach out to your clients the way they want you to, and you could be holding the key to true real estate success.

September ended with a flurry of sales and reservations | Old Palm ...

New Model Old Palm Golf ClubAlready a strong month for sales, September finished with an exclamation point. Over the last two weeks, a contract was written on a model in the Golf Estates, another contract was written on a model in the Grand Estates, and two reservations were taken for home sites in the Grand Estates.

The contract in the Golf Estates was for Courchene Development Corporation?s magnificent Royal Poinciana model, which features a fountain in the entry courtyard that sets a tone of serenity. Inside the 3,951-square-foot residence, there are four bedrooms, five full and one half baths, and a spacious Great Room that opens onto a covered loggia that?s ideal for entertaining. Other desirable features include high ceilings, beautiful woodwork and a light-infused interior.

The other sales contract was on the Castillo II, a magnificent model that Hasey Construction built in the Grand Estates neighborhood. The single-story, 5,665-square-foot Castillo II features a traditional, split floor plan with four bedrooms, five full baths, two half baths, a den and a media room. The floor plan encourages entertaining, especially in the heart of the home where the kitchen opens onto the family room.

Old Palm Golf Club?s sales team also took reservations on two half-acre home sites on Calleta Court in the Grand Estates. Both home sites overlook lushly landscaped private water features.

Sales at Old Palm have been remarkably brisk throughout the summer, and with the season approaching, it?s expected that sales will only increase.

PureData ? Meet IBM?s New Big Box For Big Data

ibmTwo worlds exist when it comes to the enterprise. The new generation of cloud services represents one space. They rely on distributed infrastructures on Amazon Web Services (AWS) and the rest of the vendors in that world. They don't buy hardware until it makes sense to move off a cloud service and into their own data center. By that time, they have such high workloads that it makes more sense to develop an infrastructure of their own.

Report: Apple ordered over 10 million mini iPads

9 hrs.

While it is expected that Apple will announce a smaller version of its popular iPad on Oct. 17, the company has yet to confirm that such a device is in the works. But there are outside?reports that Apple has placed an order for more than?10 million of these mini?iPads with its suppliers.

The Wall Street Journal's Lorraine Luk writes that Apple's Asia-based component suppliers have received orders for enough parts to make "more than 10 million units of the smaller tablets in the fourth quarter."?This report follows one explaining that "people with knowledge of the situation" claim that Apple's Asian component suppliers have kicked off mass production of the device's parts.

These reports suggest that Apple is anticipating a high demand for its new tablet, which is expected?to have a 7.85-inch display?(rather than 9.7 inches like the current models).?Rumors suggest that the so-called "iPad Mini" will not have a "Retina" display like the third-generation iPad, but instead use a lower resolution version.?

It is very likely that the smaller iPad will?use a Lightning connector, just like the iPhone 5, rather than the older 30-pin connector found on current iPad models. ?9to5?Mac's Seth Weintraub and Apple watcher?John Gruber?suggest that chances are high that this smaller tablet will look a lot like a large iPod Touch, with?a smaller bezel.

Apple has???as usual???refrained from commenting on rumors related to this unannounced device.

How to Show Your Love for Your Favorite Books on Amazon : Alex G

Posted by Alex on October 7, 2012 ? Leave a Comment?

It?s easy to share your enthusiasm for a book you read from Amazon.com. Speaking as an author, I know writers appreciate it when readers follow the simple steps in this brief video for every book they read.

Speaking of reviews: I prefer even neutral reviews to no reviews at all. A 3-star review is my target?frankly, it?s the best my work can currently hope for. A 5-star review is almost counterproductive, because really, who writes 5 star books? Do you believe books that are exclusively rated as 5-star books are really that good?
I don?t.
I?d rather buy a solid 3- and 4-star book than a book that is nothing but 5s.
Okay, check out this brief video to learn how you can make an author?s day:

Venezuela's Chavez re-elected to extend socialist rule

CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela's socialist President Hugo Chavez won re-election on Sunday, quashing the opposition's best chance at unseating him in 14 years and cementing himself as a dominant figure in modern Latin American history.

The 58-year-old Chavez took 54.42 percent of the vote, with 90 percent of the ballots counted, to 44.97 percent for the young opposition candidate Henrique Capriles, official results showed.

Chavez's victory would extend his rule of the OPEC member state to two decades, though he is recovering from cancer and the possibility of a recurrence hangs over his political future.

Jubilant supporters poured onto the streets of Caracas to celebrate the victory of a man who has near-Messianic status among Venezuela's poor, and there was relief too among leftist allies around the region - from Cuba to Bolivia - who rely on his oil-financed generosity.

"I'm celebrating with a big heart," said Mary Reina, a 62-year-old Chavez supporter who lives in the hillside slum where the president cast his vote.

"Chavez is the hope of the people and of Latin America."

Chavez fans partied and set off fireworks in the streets.

The mood was grim at Capriles' campaign headquarters, where opposition supporters broke into tears. The opposition will now have to regroup quickly for state elections in December.

Since taking power in 1999, the flamboyant former soldier has become a global flag bearer of "anti-imperialism," gleefully baiting the U.S. government while befriending leaders from Iran to Belarus whom the West views with suspicion.

At home, casting himself as an heir to independence hero Simon Bolivar, Chavez has poured billions of dollars in oil revenues into anti-poverty programs, and skillfully used his humble roots and folksy oratory to build a close connection with the masses.

While that ensured his re-election, the opposition's big share of the vote reflected a real and growing anger at Chavez's failure to fix basic problems such as violent crime, potholed roads, electricity blackouts and entrenched corruption at all levels.

WHAT NEXT?

Attention will now shift to Chavez's plans for a new six-year term at the helm of South America's biggest oil exporter.

The government spent lavishly during the campaign to boost Chavez's chances, likely ensuring healthy economic growth of 4 to 5 percent this year but potentially paving the way for an inflation-fueled hangover in 2013.

In the past, Chavez has taken advantage of election wins to press forward with radical reforms, and there is speculation that his taste for nationalizations may turn to some untouched corners of Venezuela's banking, food and health industries.

Having already controversially amended the constitution to scrap presidential term limits, Chavez might also be tempted to tinker with it further to ensure continuity for his ruling Socialist Party should his cancer return.

The constitution states that if an incumbent steps down in the first four years of a six-year term, a new vote would be called. Under such a scenario, Capriles or another opposition candidate would have another crack at power.

Either way, all eyes will be on Chavez's health again.

During a year's treatment from mid-2011, Chavez endured three operations for two cancerous tumors, and chemotherapy that left him bald, exhausted and fearing death at his lowest point.

He wrongly declared himself cured once, and repeated that in July after a recurrence, prompting skepticism from doctors who say that at least two years must pass before a cancer patient can be given a clean bill of health.

Chavez has looked bloated and at times exhausted in recent months, but he ran a surprisingly energetic end to his campaign, even managing to dance, sing and strum a guitar at rallies.

Any sign of a downturn in his health from now would stoke a succession debate in the Socialist Party. Congress head Diosdado Cabello, Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro and Vice President Elias Jaua all look well-placed for a potential push for leadership.

But none of Chavez's allies come anywhere near his popularity, so were there to be another election, Capriles could be a favorite after a widely-praised campaign that has made him well-known across Venezuela, a nation of 29 million people.

Though the 40-year-old Capriles is the once-rudderless opposition's best leader of the Chavez era, his position is not guaranteed, with other young figures - including Zulia state governor Pablo Perez and telegenic former Caracas district mayor Leopoldo Lopez - waiting in the wings.

STATE ELECTIONS AHEAD

Now, Capriles and other leaders of the Democratic Unity coalition must dust themselves off and prepare for state governorship elections in December, when they will hope at least to increase the opposition's influence at the local level.

Chavez's new six-year term begins on January 10.

His latest election win continues a remarkable story that began with his birth on July 28, 1954, in a mud hut belonging to his grandmother in the rural village of Sabaneta.

He joined the army and spent years plotting before a failed coup in 1992 against then-President Carlos Andres Perez.

On his way into jail, wearing a red military beret that was to become his trademark, Chavez gave a two-minute televised speech admitting that his revolution had failed "for now." The speech electrified the nation and launched his political career.

Pardoned in 1994, Chavez began crisscrossing the country sharing his vision and eventually shocking the political elite by sweeping to victory at the ballot box in 1998.

With private media and business leaders opposed to his rule, Chavez was briefly toppled by army dissidents and street protests in 2002 - but returned two days later thanks to military loyalists and popular counter-demonstrations.

He also survived an economically crippling oil strike.

Chavez's win will probably mean more foreign investment from politically allied countries such as China, Russia, Iran and Belarus, while Western investors remain more cautious. Relations with Washington are also likely to remain on edge, though Venezuelan oil has continued to flow to the United States over the years despite the diplomatic tension.

Wall Street had been hoping for a Capriles win, so prices of Venezuelan bonds - among the most actively-traded emerging market debt - are likely to dip on Chavez's triumph.

DETROIT - Don Kelly of the Detroit Tigers hit a sacrifice fly with one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th inning to beat the Oakland A's 5-4 and give the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the ALDS.

The best-of-five series now heads to Oakland.

The A's struck first, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the third when Yoenis Cespedes singled to drive in Cliff Pennington from second. The Tigers matched the run in the bottom of the inning. ?Miguel Cabrera scored on a Delmon Young groundout after doubling, then advancing to third on a Prince Fielder single.

After that, both teams matched zeros on the scoreboard until the seventh, when Pennington drove in Seth Smith with a single to center.

Detroit retook the lead in the bottom half of the seventh with Austin Jackson and Omar Infante scoring on an error by center fielder Coco Crisp.

The A's plated a run in the eighth on a wild pitch by Joaquin Benoit after Cespedes singled and stole second and third. Josh Reddick followed with a solo homer to give the A's a 4-3 lead.

A wild pitch by A's reliever Ryan Cook, though, allowed Kelly to score, tying the score at 4-4.

Doug Fister went seven innings for the Tigers, giving up six hits, two walks and two runs, both earned. Tommy Milone pitched six for the A's, surrendering five hits, one walk and one earned run.

Writing The Wrongs: I'm Tired

GADI ADELMAN October 2, 2012

Thirty-one years is long time. Actually, it's far too long. This week will be my birthday and I won't be celebrating.

At the age of 51, I can only look back and wonder why, why things have gotten worse rather than better. I have been speaking, writing and teaching about terror, Islam, Sharia and counter-terror for 31 years.

With all the news surrounding the death of Ambassador Christopher Stevens in Libya, I have to start with the last death of an American Ambassador.

Although the last U.S. ambassador to die in the line of duty was Arnold Raphel, the U.S. ambassador to Pakistan, it is unsure whether it was a terrorist act. He perished in a plane crash in 1988, along with the then president of Pakistan, Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq.

Prior to that, the last ambassador to be killed in the line of duty was Adolph Dubs, the U.S. ambassador in Afghanistan, in 1979. On February 14, 1979, he was kidnapped by four terrorists and was killed when he was shot during an exchange of gunfire started between the terrorists and Afghan security forces.
An American Ambassador killed by terrorists. Did America notice? No.
Months after the Ayatollah Khomeini returned to Tehran and Iran voted to become an Islamic Republic we had the embassy takeover. On November 4, 1979 Iranians seized the U.S. embassy, taking 66 hostages. 14 were later released with the remaining 52 freed after 444 days on the day of President Reagan's inauguration.
attack iran embassy 1979
This was not enough for people to take notice.
When I arrived back in the U.S. in 1981, I tried and tried to introduce this country to what I knew would be needed, anti-terrorism. I applied and interviewed with every alphabet soup government agency and was shot down by each and every one with the exception of the CIA. I was told, "This is America, we don't have terrorism."
The CIA offered me a position that I couldn't speak about for years under the penalty of ?treason', but needless to say it wasn't in the area of counter-terror. I refused the offer since it would have been going against my own morals, ethics and beliefs, not to mention, Israel.
In 1981 there weren't even a handful of counter-terror people, as a matter of fact I knew of only two, myself and my dear friend and colleague Dr. Walid Phares.
Interestingly, both I and Dr. Phares have been saying and warning of the same things for all these years.? Even though what we say and warn about seem to come to fruition each and every time, very few listen.
Between 1982 and 1991 we had the kidnappings and deaths of Americans in Lebanon. Thirty U.S. and other Western hostages were kidnapped in Lebanon by Hezbollah. Some were killed, some died in captivity and some were eventually released. Terry Anderson was held for 2,454 days.
This too was not enough for people to take notice.
Shortly after I arrived back in the U.S. from Israel we had the Lebanon bombings.
On April 18, 1983, the U.S. embassy in Beirut was bombed killing 63 people, most were embassy and CIA staff members, several were soldiers and one was a Marine. 17 of the dead were Americans.
marine barrack bombing
That same year on October 23, the U.S. Marines barracks were destroyed by suicide bombers during their stay as part of multinational ?peace keeping force'. What many do not know is that this was only the second "suicide bombing" in history, it was carried out by the terrorist organization Hezbollah and killed 241 American servicemen: 220 marines, 18 sailors and three soldiers, along with sixty other Americans injured.
The Marine barrack attack was the deadliest single-day death toll for the United States Marine Corps since the Battle of Iwo Jima of World War II, the deadliest single-day death toll for the United States military since the first day of the Tet Offensive during the Vietnam War, and the deadliest single attack on Americans overseas since World War II.
Was the bombing of the U.S. embassy and the Marine barracks in Lebanon not enough for people to realize that perhaps we as Americans were not dealing with a conventional enemy? Did the American people take notice? No. Did the world take notice? No.
Before the end of that horrendous year on December 12, 1983, the U.S. embassy in Kuwait City, Kuwait was attacked by Shiite truck bombers, killing five and injuring 80.
Did America start to take notice? No.
Then a second time within 17 months on September 20, 1984 a suicide bomber driving a truck packed with 400 pounds of explosives targeted the American embassy in Aukar, nine miles north of Beirut. 23 people are killed and 21 injured.

More flag draped coffins. Did America start to notice a trend here? No.
Dec. 3, 1984 we had the hijacking of Kuwait Airways Flight 221on its way from Kuwait to Pakistan. After it was hijacked it was diverted to Tehran. The hijackers killed two American officials from the U.S. Agency for International Development. Hezbollah was once again found to be behind this as well.
Did anyone notice? No.
The Middle East wasn't the only area Americans were attacked. On April 12, 1985 the El Descanso restaurant just outside Madrid, Spain was bombed. The explosion killed 18 Spaniards and injured 82 others, including 11 American servicemen, who according to the investigation were the target of the attack. The Islamic Jihad Organization claimed responsibility for the bombing.

More Americans targeted. Did we notice? No.
Once again, Hezbollah and the Islamic Jihad struck at Americans. On June 14, 1985, TWA Flight 847 was hijacked. The eight crewmembers and 145 passengers endured a three-day intercontinental ordeal and were held for 17 days. Some passengers were beaten. Passengers with Jewish sounding names were separated from the others, and U.S. Navy diver Robert Dean Stethem was tortured and murdered. His body was thrown onto the tarmac. Dozens of passengers were held hostage over the next two weeks until released by their captors after some of their demands were met.

It wasn't only the American servicemen and women that had to worry. On October 7, 1985, four heavily armed Palestinian terrorists hijacked the Italian cruise ship, Achille Lauro. The ship had more than 400 passengers and crew. The terrorists killed disabled American tourist 69-year-old Leon Klinghoffer because he was a Jew, and threw his body overboard with his wheelchair.
killing of leon klinghoffer
Did anyone outside of the Klinghoffer family notice? Not really.
Muslim terrorists found that airports were easier than cruise ships and on December 27, 1985, four PLO (Palestinian Liberation Organization) terrorists walked up to the shared ticket counter for Israel's El Al Airlines and Trans World Airlines at Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport outside Rome, Italy. After they fired assault rifles and threw grenades, 16 were dead and 99 were injured.
Within minutes on the same day, the Schwechat Airport (Vienna International Airport) in Vienna, Austria, was attacked as well. Three terrorists threw hand grenades into a crowd of passengers checking in for a flight to Tel Aviv, two people were killed instantly and 39 others injured. A third victim died on January 22, 1986, of hand grenade wounds sustained in the attack. These two attacks killed 19 people, 5 of whom were Americans. The bombing was linked to Libya.
More Americans dead. Did America notice? No.
On April 2, 1986, terrorists exploded a bomb inside TWA Flight 840 as it flew from Rome to Athens. Four American citizens, including a nine-month-old infant fell to their deaths after being sucked from the cabin through the nine-by-four foot hole that the blast created in the side of the plane. ?Five others on the aircraft were injured as the cabin suffered a rapid decompression.
Anyone remember TWA 840? Anyone notice? No.
April 5, 1986, saw the attack on the La Belle discoth?que in West Berlin, Germany. This was yet another location that was commonly frequented by United States soldiers. A bomb placed under a table near the disk jockey's booth exploded killing three people and injuring 230 people, including 79 American servicemen. This attack was also linked to Libya.
More American servicemen killed. Did any Americans notice? No.
Another hijacking of an American plane occurred on September 5, 1986, while on the ground at Karachi, Pakistan, by four terrorists from the Abu Nidal Organization. Pan Am Flight 73 had 360 on board. Twenty of the passengers were killed during the hijacking, 13 were from India and the rest were from United States, Pakistan and Mexico.
An American plane hijacked. Did any Americans notice? No.
Excluding Americans that were killed in Israel in other terror attacks, there was two years of quiet that was shattered in Lockerbie on December 21, 1988. This time it was Pan Am Flight 103 departing from Frankfurt to New York. It was blown up in midair, killing all 259 passengers and another 11 people on the ground in Scotland.
pan am flight 103 wreckage
You would have thought that after this Americans would take notice. Sadly, no.
On January 27, 1989, three simultaneous bombings were carried out against U.S. business targets, the Turkish American Businessmen Association and the Economic Development Foundation in Istanbul, and the Metal Employees Union in Ankara.
More Americans as targets. Did America notice? No.
More Americans were targeted on June 12, 1989, in Bosphorus Straits, Turkey. A bomb exploded aboard an unoccupied boat used by U.S. consular staff. The explosion caused extensive damage but no casualties.
American State Department employees targeted. Did any Americans notice? No.
Between 1989 and 1991 there were no less than six attacks on Americans and American servicemen all on U.S. bases. On October 11, 1989, in Izmir, Turkey, an explosive charge went off outside a U.S. military PX.
On February 7, 1991, in Adana, terrorists shot and killed a U.S. civilian contractor as he was getting into his car at the Incirlik Air Base, Turkey.
On February 28, 1991, two terrorists shot and wounded a U.S. Air Force officer as he entered his residence in Izmir, Turkey.
On March 28, 1991, three U.S. marines were shot at and injured by an unknown terrorist while driving near Camp Three, in Jubial, Saudi Arabia.
On October 28, 1991, Victor Marwick, an American soldier serving at the Turkish-American base, Tuslog in Ankara, Turkey, was killed and his wife wounded in a car bomb attack. The Turkish Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the attack.
Lastly on October 28, 1991, two car bombings killed a U.S. Air Force sergeant and severely wounded an Egyptian diplomat in Istanbul, Turkey. The Turkish Islamic Jihad again claimed responsibility.
military funeral arlington
Yet more flag draped coffins. Did anyone notice? No.
The year 1991 saw more attacks on Americans in Beirut, Lebanon. On November 8, a 100-kg car bomb destroyed the administration building of the American University in Beirut, killing one person and wounding more than a dozen.
Through all the attacks on Americans in 1991, did America notice? No.
On October 12, 1992, a U.S. soldier serving with the United Nations was stabbed and wounded near the port of Umm Qasr, Iraq.
Back in the U.S. on January 25, 1993, a Pakistani gunman opened fire on Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) employees standing outside of the building in Virginia. Two agents, Frank Darling and Bennett Lansing, were killed and three others wounded.
This occurred on American soil in Virginia. Did Americans notice? No.
Then in 1993 we had the first attack on the World Trade Center. On February 26, a massive bomb exploded in a van in the underground parking garage below the World Trade Center in New York City, killing six and wounding 1,042. Four terrorists were responsible for the attack.
WTC attack 1993
At this point I really thought that America would take notice. I was wrong.
Between the 1993 attack on the World Trade Center and September 11, 2001 there were at least 55 other attacks around the world by Muslim terrorists that targeted Americans, many were killed and scores more injured, but America didn't notice.
These listed attacks were against Americans; during this same period Israel was the target of and suffered even more attacks.
Since 9/11, things have gotten worse throughout the world, not better. Somehow through backwards political correctness and ignorance, the perpetrator has made himself the victim. Sadly, that's what Americans notice. What's more, most Americans believe it.
It has been stated by leaders the world over as they have seen their own countries succumb to and be held hostage by Islam.
Former French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, on February 11, 2011, while being interviewed on French National Television about Islam in his country,

"My answer is clearly yes, it [multiculturalism] is a failure."
On February 5, 2011, U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron, stated in a speech while speaking on taking a tougher stance on groups promoting Islamist terror in his country,
"Frankly, we need a lot less of the passive tolerance of recent years and much more active, muscular liberalism. Let's properly judge these organizations: Do they believe in universal human rights - including for women and people of other faiths? Do they believe in equality of all before the law? Do they believe in democracy and the right of people to elect their own government? Do they encourage integration or separatism?"
"Again it just seems the Muslim community is very much in the spotlight, being treated as part of the problem as opposed to part of the solution."
Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany stated on October 17, 2010 while speaking on Muslims in Germany,
"We kidded ourselves for a while that they wouldn't stay, but that's not the reality."
"Of course the tendency had been to say, 'let's adopt the multicultural concept and live happily side by side, and be happy to be living with each other'. But this concept has failed, and failed utterly."
As leader after leader has seen their country under the threat of terror and retaliation become more Islamic, more Sharia compliant and they lose their right to free speech, they have all come to the same conclusion. Americans though don't take notice.
The Arab Spring has brought us more Islamic ruled governments, not more "freedom;" the reason is simple, what we in the West refer to as "freedom" is not what Muslims see as freedom. Their freedom is that of the Quran. Their freedom is the word of Allah. Their freedom is living like they did 1400 years ago. Period.
If you think I am wrong, look at the Middle East. Take notice.
I'm tired of being called "an alarmist," I'm tired of being called "an Islamophobe," I'm tired of being called "a nut," but most of all I'm tired of America not waking up to the truth.
Since the terror attack that should have been the one to end all others, 9/11, there have been 19,680 deadly attacks, with over 260,000 deaths, all in the name of Islam. This is not a few people "that have hijacked a religion." This is the religion. This is Islam. It's time to take notice.

Muslim militants shifting focus to North Africa: Tunisia leader

CAIRO (Reuters) - Islamist militants are shifting their focus from southwest Asia to Arab North Africa and stepping up violence in the region, Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki said in an interview published on Tuesday.

Moderate Islamists who were harshly suppressed by secular Arab dictators have gained political power or prominence following popular uprisings in Tunisia, Libya and Egypt.

But armed, militant Islamist groups, including the North African wing of al Qaeda, have also benefited from lapses in internal security across the region wrought by the often chaotic transition to more democratic government.

Marzouki told pan-Arab daily al Hayat that some of Tunisia's hardline Salafists had links to al Qaeda and that North African countries would work before the end of the year to form a united front against the threat of rising Islamist militancy.

"The centre of the terrorist movement is moving now from Afghanistan and Pakistan to the Arab Maghreb region ... and the great danger is at our doors," Marzouki said.

He said around 3,000 Salafists in Tunisia were estimated to be potentially dangerous and described them as a "cancer" in the country, the first in the Arab world to bring down dictatorship in a wave of popular uprisings.

Marzouki, a secularist in office under a power-sharing deal with the moderate Islamist Ennahda party after it won a free election a year ago, said talks with such militants were futile and the threat they posed must be addressed with legal measures.

SECURITY VACUUM

"(Militants) are mainly present in Libya and Algeria, and especially in the south," Marzouki said, referring to the remote and thinly populated desert expanses of the Maghreb where policing is weaker and there has been traditional tribal resistance to central authority.

"There is a security problem now threatening the entire Arab Maghreb region ... All our southern borders are threatened with this problem now. There has to be a unified response from all the countries."

Last month, Salafists predominated in a crowd of protesters who ransacked the U.S. embassy in Tunisia in fury over a film insulting the Prophet Mohammad, killing two people, and the U.S. ambassador to Libya was killed in an Islamist militant ambush.

Al Qaeda's affiliate in North Africa then urged Muslims to kill more U.S. government representatives in the region - particularly in Libya, Tunisia, Morocco and Mauritania.

AQIM, or Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, emerged out of Algeria's civil conflict but has gradually expanded south into the Sahara and raised its profile in recent years with hit-and-run attacks and kidnapping of Westerners for ransom.

There have been no Arab Spring-style revolts in Algeria or Morocco. But Algeria's government has long clashed with Islamist militants particularly from AQIM on its territory while Morocco has suffered occasional fatal bomb attacks.

Marzouki also said that Arab peacekeeping forces should enter Syria to prevent chaos in a transitional period if Syrian President Bashar al-Assad succumbed to an uprising now in its 18th month. "(Assad's) regime is finished and dead, and we must move now. Syria could enter a stage of overwhelming chaos."

Rivalries among world and regional Arab and Muslim powers have prevented effective foreign intervention in Syria's conflict.

Mixed-gender swim relays to debut at World Cup

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ? The battle of the sexes has hit the pool.

The opening meet of the World Cup in Dubai on Tuesday will feature 4x50-meter mixed relays for the first time. Teams will be made up of two men and two women, and it is up to them to decide the order ? so, for instance, a woman could race against a man on the anchor leg.

The initiative will be part of all eight World Cup meets. Swimming's governing body, FINA, has said the relays could be introduced at the short-course world championships in Istanbul in December and one day become an Olympic event.

"It's really important for every discipline, every sport, to improve, to look forward to develop further," FINA executive director Cornel Marculescu said Monday. "We will test it in the World Cup and see how this is going and will probably introduce at the world championship if results are acceptable for swimmers and coaches."

The lineups for the relay were not available Monday, but the top swimmers competing include 100 breaststroke Olympic champion Cameron van der Burgh and multiple Olympic medalist Therese Alshammar. They both welcomed the new event as a chance to further raise the profile of swimming, which often suffers a significant drop in interest between Olympics.

"When we bring in these kinds of relays, it will be extremely exciting for the first couple of years," Van der Burgh said. "No one knows what will happen. Who are the favorites? How it will work? Who they will choose? I'm all for making sport bigger."

The move comes in the wake of Chinese star Ye Shiwen's amazing performance at the 2012 London Games, in which her last freestyle lap in winning the women's 400 individual medley was a split-second faster than what American champion Ryan Lochte posted in the final 50 of the men's race.

Austrian swimmer Markus Rogan was less enthusiastic when asked earlier this year.

"That's for the next generation," he said. "I hope people figure out very quickly that there's one clear formula to swim the fastest, which is to make the girls swim the fastest strokes. The guys have to swim breaststroke. But I'm sure some nations will try to split it a different way."

Critics have complained the move adds another event to an already crowded schedule and that there are already plenty of big names in the sport to attract fans.

"I don't think we need innovation at all costs," European Swimming Federation President Paolo Barelli said. "We've already got a full program over eight days (at major competitions), with great personalities ? men and women."

There will be a mixed medley relay Tuesday, followed by 4x50 mixed freestyle relay Wednesday. The mixed relays will also be used in November at the European short-course championships in Chartres, France.

This won't be the first time that mixed relays have taken place.

There was one at the 2007 Duel in the Pool after the world championships in Melbourne, when Libby Lenton (now Trickett) broke a world record when racing against Michael Phelps on the leadoff leg of the 4x100 free relay. The time was not recognized as the women's 100 free world record.

There was also a mixed relay at the inaugural 2010 Youth Olympics in Singapore, which generally received positive reviews.

Van der Burgh and Alshammar have both raced in them in the past. Alshammar said mixed relays were common in her native Sweden, while Van der Burgh took part last year in one at the Salnikov Cup in Russia.

"The race went off and it was great to watch," Van der Burgh said. "To watch the last 50 meters was extremely exciting, seeing some of the girls out front and the men hunting them down. For me, the spectator value was extremely high because it was something that hadn't been done before."

Both swimmers said they would treat the mixed relay like any other race, concentrating on their own performances and not worrying whether they were up against a man or a woman.

"It's not like rugby where we have to be careful about breaking a girl's bones," Van der Burgh said. "When you are swimming for the team, you have your own lane and you swim your own race like normal. When I'm at the Olympic Games, I'm not thinking about other people."

For women, Alshammar said, racing against men could be beneficial.

"You can always chase someone," she said, "so that would be a good incentive."
