Tim Reis, head of mobile display for Google, stopped by our Mobile Advertising Conference this month and explained why mobile ads are the next big thing.
We think Reis hits the nail right on the head when he says that cell phones are "extraordinarily personal devices" and therefore must be treated as such by advertisers.
In order to break into a consumer's "circle of trust," mobile advertisers can't spam or mislead its targeted audience while also providing something that benefits them.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index added 1.19 points, or less than 0.1 percent, to 1,410.49

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? If experts thought they knew anything about individual investors, it was this: their emotions lead them to sell winning stocks too soon and hold on to losers too long.
But new research casts doubt on this widely held theory that individual investors' decisions are driven mainly by their feelings toward losses and gains. In an innovative study, researchers found evidence that individual investors' decisions are primarily motivated by their beliefs about a stock's future.
"The story is not about whether an investor hates losing or loves gains -- it's not primarily a story about preferences," said Itzhak Ben-David, co-author of the study and assistant professor of finance at Ohio State University's Fisher College of Business.
"It is a story about information and speculation. The investor has a belief about where a stock is headed and that's what he acts on. Investors act more on their beliefs than their preferences."
Ben-David conducted the study with David Hirshleifer of the Paul Merage School of Business at the University of California, Irvine. Their results appear in the August 2012 issue of the journal Review of Financial Studies.
The researchers studied stock transactions from more than 77,000 accounts at a large discount broker from 1990 through 1996 and did a variety of analyses that had never been done before. They examined when investors bought individual stocks, when they sold them, and how much they earned or lost with each sale.
The result was a radical rethinking of why individual investors sell winning stocks and hold on to losers.
The findings don't mean that investors don't have an aversion to losses and a desire to sell winners, Ben-David said. But the trading data suggests that these feelings aren't dominating their decisions.
"People have a variety of reasons for trading stocks, which may include tax issues, margin calls, and an aversion to losses. These all may play a role, but what we show that beliefs are dominant for the trading of retail investors."
The tendency to sell winners too early and to keep losers too long has been called the "disposition effect" by economists.
"The disposition effect has been well-documented. The question is what we make of it. A lot of people look at the data and interpret it as meaning that the typical retail investor is irrational, simply reacting to their feelings about gains and losses," he said.
"But what we find is that, looking at the data, we can't really learn about their preferences. We don't learn about what they like or don't like. Surely, they don't like to lose money -- but their reasons for selling stocks are more complex than that."
The simplest test was to see what investors do when a stock is trading just slightly higher or lower than the price they paid -- in other words a small winner or a small loser.
If investors really did make stock trades based simply on their pleasure in making money and their aversion to realizing losses, a small winner should lead to more sales than a small loser.
But this study found that investors were not clearly more likely to sell when it was a small winner than when it was a small loser.
Another piece of evidence against the theory that investors' decisions are driven by their aversion to realizing losses was the fact that, the more a stock lost value, the more likely investors were to sell it.
"If investors had an aversion to realizing losses, larger losses should reduce the probability they would sell, but we found the opposite -- larger losses were associated with a higher probability of selling," Ben-David said.
Interestingly, the stocks that investors sell the least are those that did not have a price change since purchase.
Another clue is the fact that men and frequent traders were more likely than others to sell winning stocks quickly to reap their profits and sell losers quickly to cut their losses.
"Past research has shown that overconfidence in investing is associated with men and frequent traders," Ben-David said. "They have a belief in their superior knowledge and so you would expect them to buy and sell more quickly than others as they speculate on stock prices. That's exactly what we found. They are engaged in belief-based trading."
The researchers also examined when investors were more likely to buy additional shares of a stock that they had previously purchased. They found that the probability of buying additional shares is greater for shares that lost value than it was for shares that gained value.
That shouldn't happen if investors are really acting on emotions rather than beliefs, Ben-David said.
"If you buy additional shares of a stock that has lost value, that suggests you are acting on your beliefs that the stock is really a winner and other people have just not realized it yet," he said.
"You wouldn't buy additional shares of a losing stock if your biggest motivation was to avoid realizing losses."
However, Ben-David noted that just because investors act on beliefs rather than feelings doesn't mean they are acting rationally.
"They may be overconfident in their own abilities. It is a different kind of irrationality from being averse to selling losers," Ben-David said.
This study's suggestion that investors act more on beliefs than preferences is likely to make waves in the economics profession, he said.
"In economics, these two stories are very different. Beliefs and preferences are very different concepts, and it is important to distinguish them and how they affect investors. Many economists had thought that an irrational aversion to selling losers was crucial for the trading decisions of retail investors."

Things are heating up, and not in a good way, for Tyler Perry. Fire erupted at the 42-year-old filmmaker's southwest Atlanta studio Monday -- the second blaze in the last four months, E! News confirms.
The building was undergoing roof repairs before the fire broke out at the 200,000 square-foot complex. The blaze was reported just before 11 a.m. and was confined to the roof of the studio.

According to the Atlanta Fire department, there is no structural damage to the building and no injuries have been reported. The cause of the small blaze is still under investigation. Calls to Perry's rep have not yet been returned.

"It was a small fire that was put out with fire extinguishers," a source tells E! "The fire department responded to the scene immediately and (there were) no injuries." This is the second fire at Tyler Perry Studios in recent months. In May, a far more serious four-alarm blaze ripped through the studio lot, collapsing one building and causing significant damage to the backlot facade.?
The cause of the first fire was undetermined. Perry opened the lot in October 2008.?

With the 2012 video gaming season in full swing, lots of drool-worthy titles have already been released to the sheer delight of gamers everywhere; or at least, to those who are able to play them.
For console gamers who can?t, the reason is probably because they can?t afford to buy the games at day-one prices just yet. PC gamers, though, have one more factor to contend with: Their gaming rigs just aren?t powerful enough to accommodate the latest games.
Desktop users can get by this relatively easily, what with desktops being flexibly upgradeable and all. However, laptop users aren?t afforded such advantages. More often than not, the specs of the laptop parts that their computers came with upon purchase are the specs that their computers will keep
As such, laptop gamers will have to wait a little longer until they can save up enough to purchase a new laptop (or better yet, switch over to desktops). In the meantime, they can install older games that they haven?t played yet; games that their laptop components will be able to handle. Batman: Arkham City? Check. Fallout: New Vegas? Check. Mass Effect 2, Dead Space, the first Assassin?s Creed? Check, check, and stealth-kill-you-in-broad-daylight check.
Heck, since you?ve already gone back by about five years, why not just go retro all the way? Surely your little ol? laptop with its 2-year-old laptop parts will be able to handle it. And who knows, you might just rediscover a forgotten classic or two that your dad used to play when he was your age (or your mom, just so we?re clear that we?re not being sexist here).
Below is a list of the best emulators of the some of the most popular console systems of yesteryear, counting down from the most recent to the most ancient.
5.?????? Dolphin (Nintendo GameCube)
After years of stubbornly sticking to cartridge-based games, Nintendo finally made the switch to optical media with the GameCube in 2001. Although eventually losing the sixth generation console war to Sony?s PlayStation 2 and Microsoft?s Xbox, the Cube was nevertheless popular in its own right, especially with the younger crowd.
The Dolphin emulator seeks to reintroduce these games which were mostly unplayed by the gaming majority (the adults and older kids, that is). Better yet, the Dolphin is also able to emulate Wii games.
4.?????? PCSX2 (Sony PlayStation 2)
Of course everyone has heard of the PS2. It?s only the bestselling console of all time, right?
Launched in 2000, it has since sold more than 150 million units; spawning countless now-classic games in the process.
PCSX2 is able to emulate a many titles, most of which are the blockbuster titles. The only downside is, since the PS2 employed a multi-core processor structure, at least a dual-core processor in your PC is a necessity for the PCSX2 to work, along with a 1 GB RAM and a fairly powerful GPU.
3.?????? ePSXe (Sony PlayStation)
The console that built the (gaming) house of Sony, the original PlayStation was one of the biggest reasons why the video game industry transcended from being kid stuff to being big business. The PS is as historic as they come.
ePSXe has come a long way since emulation first hit the mainstream, with almost all titles capable of being emulated, and at upgraded graphics, too.
?
2.?????? ZSNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System)
?The eventual winner of the fourth generation console war (a.k.a. the 16-bit war), the SNES was one of probably only two consoles that most adults nowadays grew up on. It featured advanced graphics and sounds during its time, and was home to some of the most revered titles ever.
ZSNES, widely considered the best SNES emulator, allows for robust customization of games, and emulates almost all titles with 100% accuracy.
1.?????? Gens (Sega Genesis)
Although playing second fiddle to the SNES, the Genesis is no less a classic console. Admirably giving Nintendo a run for its money for quite a while there, what the console lacked in power compared to its rival, it made up for with technical innovations that made full use of what it had.
Like ZSNES, Gens is deemed the best Genesis emulator. Aside from allowing a variety of game customizations, it is also able to emulate the Sega CD and the 32X: The two add-on consoles to the Genesis.

Prior to the poison effects of asbestos, large companies supplied merchant marine ships and other compsnieswith this material - that we now knowwas hazerdous. My Father and others did not know this - nor did most of the ships and companies thatt were supplied. The military, including the merchant marines used these products and are suffering from cancer, lung disorders and mesothelioma.
We started getting settlement checks from law firms handling the cases against the contractors, companies and manufacturers as we have been included in several class action meso lawsuits. My father was not alive when this began. He died 2 years prior but we did not have to do anything. Maritime lawyers and firms have been handling the cases on behalf of the estates of thousands of merchant marines, navy shipmen, factory workers, ship builders and more.
There are hundreds of ongoing lawsuits and cases involving people who are sick, and the families of those who died. Some of these cases dealt with people and contractors from 60 years ago or longer. Many of these companies are out of business, bankrupt or other, so the cases may not be going anywhere in some instances.
Since asbestos was not really considered poisonous back then and since there were many variable of products used, proving liability on a company can prove a tough one. But documents still exist and meso asbestos victims are getting their restitution over time.
Thankfully, these asbestos exposure situations of putting the health and safety of our maritime servicemen and other workers will not repeat itself. It is a banned substance. Asbestos, mesothelioma and lung cancer causes have long been established as it relates to known poison materials. But, the loved ones and estates of people who died or got ill due to these asbestos poison health issues may get some justice through meso law and class action settlements.

The homeowner can really do themselves a favor in today?s economy by doing a bit of remodeling. The price of construction materials has been down and many contractors are offering very competitive estimates to keep their crews working.
The general uproar created in the household by a remodeling project can usually be reduced by doing one room at a time. Partial remodeling usually concentrates on two rooms ? the bathroom and the kitchen. There are a number of things that can be done in a bathroom that will enhance your everyday routine and could increase the value of your home without a tremendous investment. Watch our tutorial?on installing the Moen io Digital vertical spa and see just one new bathroom extra that is available.
The green age is with us and that has brought some improvements that you might want to consider when renovating a bathroom. Most new showerheads and faucets now use less water than older ones. These low flow products can take a bit off the water bill and be friendlier to the environment. Your carbon footprint does include power needed to get water processed and sent to your home, so low flow faucets and shower heads are a must if minimizing your carbon footprint is an end goal. There are also toilets that help reduce the water used in the home so be advised when upgrading this fixture too.
A conversation with one of our Lorain County plumbing and heating?experts is a logical place to start when getting information on bathroom remodeling. Over the course of the last 5 decades, we have provided the Lorain County area with expert advice, professional workmanship and the latest in advances to make any remodeling job a success. Often we hear on the news that a popular website has been compromised and many people have had their personal data stolen. When a website is compromised, it leads to thousands of risks such as identity theft. Instead of hacking a particular site, data is collected through look alike sites, through spyware or through other means of collection, most of which happen on a single user basis. When personal information is given out to anyone online, many people become nervous because they are in doubt about what actually can happen.
Internet security can be breached by different types of malicious software. Malware is a type of virus that forces itself into your computer system in the form of viruses, Trojan horses and worms. Viruses are usually simple programs that replicate their structure by infecting files on a computer system. Trojan horses pretend to be something harmless so the user is tricked into thinking that they are downloading something safe. This is how it gets into the system and infects it.
There are some issues that can be the cause of a breach in internet security. Loopholes in the internet system are informed, though the major interest of internet is contact of main servers so it could be possible to get rid of the problems of distant connections. Currently, the protocols of security are not mature. Though mostly all global companies have introduced a particular solution for internet security, nothing is full proof.
Some ways that we can make internet security better on our computer systems are to first, have a strong policy in place that everyone in the business follows. Then they will know what their responsibilities are when it comes to the internet and surfing the web at work. Of course the most important option for all businesses and home computers is to install anti-virus software that is managed from a single server point and that ensures ever PC will automatically be scanned for viruses, worms and Trojan horses.

Mariah Carey is in.
And... well... that's about all we know when it comes to American Idol Season 12.
With rumors citing everyone from Adam Lambert to Nick Jonas to Diddy as potential judges, a new report says the show has settled on the three artists it would like to sit down alongside Carey.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, producers are hoping to cover every musical gamut, from rap to country to Latin. Along those lines, its top choices would be:
One hold-up, however, is that Minaj is the new Pepsi spokesperson and Idol is notorious for its overt advertising deal with Coca-Cola.
Moreover, this quartet would be VERY expensive. Carey is already set to earn $17 million for one year of work and luring in other major names such as the ones listed above would require individual salaries into the eight figures.
But that's a problem for Fox. You tell us: How would you feel about Minaj, Urban and Igelsias as American Idol judges?

In the furor over Todd Akin?s inventive understanding of biology, we should not lose sight of another matter. His position on abortion--that the victim of rape should be compelled to bear her rapist?s child--has been the official position of the Republican Party for more than thirty years.
Indeed, the language of the GOP platform--all but certain to be adopted in Tampa next week--goes further. It declares that: "Faithful to the 'self-evident' truths enshrined in the Declaration of Independence, we assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed.?
Taken together with its support for ?a human life amendment to the Constitution,? and for ?legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment's protections apply to unborn children," its platform calls for a ban on all abortions--even to save the life of the mother.
So why has this decades-long position triggered comparatively little political furor?
It?s simple: Nobody takes the platform of a political party seriously any longer. And that is one of the most striking, if all but ignored, changes in American political life.
For most of our history, conventions were held not only to nominate candidates, but also to debate and define what the parties stood for. The platform was a serious declaration of purpose, and the fights were hugely consequential. Candidates accepted not only their party?s nomination, but the platform as well.
Declaring the spread of slavery ?a crime against humanity?, the 1860 Republican platform defined the stakes of Lincoln?s candidacy. (The party also called on the federal government to support a railroad to the Pacific, which today?s GOP would no doubt label ?socialist.?)
The fight ?free silver? at the 1896 Democratic convention led directly to the nomination of William Jennings Bryan, and gave a populist dimension to the party. The 1924 battles over Prohibition and immigration tied Democrats in knots; it took 103 ballots to nominate its doomed candidate for President.
Then, in 1948, the Democratic Party?s embrace of a strong civil rights plank led to walkouts and the third party states. In fact, the segregationist candidacy of South Carolina Gov. Strom Thurmond carried four Southern states.
In 1964, the Republican convention?s failure to denounce extremism (including the radically right-wing John Birch Society) was a key reason why moderates and liberals (including Michigan Gov. George Romney) refused to back the candidacy of Barry Goldwater.
In 1968, the fight over the Vietnam War was both a symbol and cause of the deeply divided Democratic Party.
And today? The platform is largely regarded as a way to placate the more ideologically-fervent constituencies, without really binding the nominees to much of anything. Mitt Romney backs an exception for abortion in the case of rape, and his running mate, Paul Ryan, has recently adopted the same position. Four years ago, John McCain?s campaign made an effort to put that exemption into the platform, and then more or less shrugged off the issue.
As we?ve seen, the platform struggles go beyond abortion. In 1996, GOP nominee Bob Dole publicly rejected the platform plank that called for an end to ?birthright citizenship? for the children of illegal immigrants. Back in 1980, Jimmy Carter?s campaign allowed into the platform planks calling for increased government spending on behalf of ?full employment? as a sop to the vanquished backers of Ted Kennedy.
Why does the party platform mean so little these days? For the same reason conventions don?t nominate candidates anymore. Just as candidates for president no longer emerge from those infamous smoke-filled rooms, but spend two years traipsing across the country, the President and the party leaders in Congress argue their views in front of the whole nation. Even when a candidate tries to fudge an issue--could you give us a clue about just what loopholes you intend to close, Rep. Ryan?--there?s comparatively little need for a platform to set down what a party stands for. Anyone who cannot see the exceptionally clear divisions between Obama and Romney has simply been living off the grid.
I confess to a sense of loss at the decline of platform fights. I would have loved to have been in the galleries or the floor when a chant of ?Free and Unlimited Coinage of Silver at Sixteen-to-One!? erupted from the hall.
Of course, I?m still waiting for the chance to analyze potential vote-switches as a second-ballot draws near.

Jennifer?Benka, the new Executive Director of the Academy of American Poets, is queer, political, and has?pretty awesome taste in music. Having?served as Managing Director of Poets & Writers for almost a decade and, most recently, as the National Director of Development and Marketing for 826 National, she?s also an accomplished writer in her own right. She holds a BA in Journalism from Marquette University, an MFA in Creative Writing-Poetry from The New School, and is the author of?two books of poetry:?Pinko?(Hanging Loose Press) and?A Box of Longing With Fifty Drawers?(Soft Skull Press). Lambda Literary had the chance to ask her some questions just after her official start at the?Academy.
What would you say is the guiding mission of the Academy of American Poets?
The mission of the Academy of American Poets is to support poets in the U.S. at all stages of their careers and to foster the appreciation of contemporary poetry. The organization accomplishes this by administering nearly 200 College Prizes to budding poets at schools across the country as well as seven major awards for poets?from a first-book prize through a lifetime achievement award. Our website Poets.org is full of excellent biographical information about poets, thousands of poems, and offers an Online Poetry Classroom, which provides free poetry lesson plans and other tools for teachers. The site also houses the Poetry Audio Archive, a collection of nearly 500 recordings dating back to the 1960s of poets reading their work. And, in April 1996, the Academy launched what is now the largest literary celebration in the world, National Poetry Month.
Do you see yourself expanding on that mission?
I think we will be innovating new ways to deliver on that mission. The Academy of American Poets was founded by a visionary 23-year-old woman, Marie Bullock, who believed that poetry was underappreciated in the U.S. and that poets here should have more opportunities to be celebrated for their art. That was 78 years ago, and while the Academy has been the leading organization during the past seven decades advocating for poetry to have a meaningful location in American culture, it?s clear we must continue to make this case.
Given the long history of queer writers, and queer poets in particular, it feels quite vital to have a queer woman as the Academy?s new Executive Director. Can you speak a bit to the relationship between poetry and queerness for you personally?
This is obviously a subject that deserves much more than I might offer here. But, I am reminded in this moment of something Minnie Bruce Pratt said at a National Outwrite Conference in the early 1990s. She noted that (and I am paraphrasing from memory) ?queer? descended etymologically from an idea of ?outsider.? She suggested poetry, too, has had outsider status and that we gain a particular sensitivity living and creating at the margins. And this is true of course for LGBT writers and also writers of color and working class writers. One has, perhaps, a different relationship to language when it has been used to isolate and divide one?s community, to oppress, or enforce powerlessness.
I am personally interested in exploring the possibilities of poetry?to counter rhetoric, reinvigorate language, and uplift the material of the everyday. To help us understand ourselves by translating and communicating experience and deep emotion. To help us envision new ways of being and new worlds. To say what has been unsaid. I?m interested in poetry as a means to transfer knowledge and as a place to conceptualize freedom, as well as beauty.
How do you think your work as a poet informs your work as an administrator??
I have always been dually serious about my creative life and my work in nonprofit management. I feel absolutely fortunate to be working at an organization that speaks to both of my passions and to get up in the morning to go serve poetry. Being a part of the poetry community personally as a writer and an events organizer has given me an appreciation of the breadth of our community. Adrienne Rich, in a 2006 interview with the Guardian, said, ?There is no universal Poetry, anyway, only poetries and poetics, and the streaming, intertwining histories to which they belong.? I am looking forward to meeting and working with poets, readers, and educators working in and celebrating the range of our art form.
What book had the greatest influence on you as a young poet??
Emily Dickinson?s Complete Poems.
?and any current influences?
I have recently returned but yet one more time to Muriel Rukeyser?s collection of essays The Life of Poetry (Paris Press), which offers insight into the resistance to poetry in the U.S. and also articulates an aspirational case for the art form. Simply put, Rukeyser believes people want poetry. She writes: ?We wish to be told, in the most memorable way, what we have been meaning all along.?
I read broadly and, fortunately, as I step into this job, the diversity of the Academy?s Chancellors speaks to my interests: Victor Hern?ndez Cruz, Toi Derricotte, Mark Doty, Marilyn Hacker, Lyn Hejinian, Juan Felipe Herrera, Edward Hirsch, Jane Hirshfield, Naomi Shihab Nye, Sharon Olds, Ron Padgett, Carl Phillips, Marie Ponsot, Arthur Sze, and Anne Waldman.
Of the Academy?s current programming (Poem-A-Day, National Poetry Month, Poets Forum, etc.), what?s your favorite?
I think all of the Academy?s programs present unique and very interesting opportunities to learn more about and engage with poetry. On October 18 ? 20 we will be holding our annual Poets Forum in New York City. The event explores contemporary poetry and features panel discussions, readings, and walking tours. And if you?re interested in starting your day off creatively, you might consider signing up for our Poem-A-Day feature, which delivers a provocative and inspiring poem to your inbox every morning.

Prominent Hollywood film director Tony Scott, whose signature works included "Top Gun," jumped to his death from a bridge in San Pedro, California, city officials announced late Sunday.
Police and US Coast Guard officials pulled Scott's body out of the water near the Vincent Thomas Bridge, which is built over Los Angeles Harbor, the coroner's office said, adding that he had jumped from the structure.
Investigators found a suicide note in his office, the Los Angeles Times reported. Its contents have not been revealed.
The newspaper earlier reported a suicide note had been found in his car, which was parked on one lane of the bridge linking the city suburb of San Pedro to Terminal Island.
A witness saw Scott, 68, climb over a fence on the bridge and jump into the water, according to Lieutenant Joseph Bale of the city coroner's office. Other witnesses said they later saw Scott's shoes floating in the water.
Authorities summoned divers and a helicopter in a bid to find Scott's body in the port's murky waters. It was recovered at approximately 3:00 pm (2200 GMT), four hours after he jumped, and turned over to coroner officials, Bale said.
The search has delayed a ferry linking the coast with Santa Catalina island.
Scott was the younger brother of fellow film director Ridley Scott, the maker of Oscar-winning movies like "Gladiator" and "Black Hawk Down" as well as other hits like "Blade Runner."
The family has confirmed Scott's death, but offered no details.
"I can confirm that Tony Scott has indeed passed away," the late director's spokeswoman, Katherine Rowe, told reporters. "The family asks that their privacy be respected at this time."
Scott, who was born in Britain in 1944, made his mark in the mid-1980s when he directed "Top Gun," an action-filled blockbuster about elite navy pilots featuring then-rising star Tom Cruise.
It was one of the highest-grossing films of 1986, taking in more than $176 million and giving a major boost to Scott's and Cruise's careers. It also won an Academy Award for best music, original song.
The British filmmaker sought out Cruise again in 1990 when he started working on "Days of Thunder," another thriller exposing the rough-and-tumble world of NASCAR stock car racing.
He believed the actor's youthful charm, optimism and never-ending energy would guarantee success.
"Tom can sit behind the wheel of a race car and smoke a cigarette and this movie will make a fortune," Scott was quoted as saying at the time.
He did not miss the mark.
The film was criticized for what Hollywood media deemed excessive and sometimes over-the-top use of special effects, but it did well at the box office, grossing nearly $158 million.
Besides "Top Gun" and "Days of Thunder," Scott directed "Enemy of the State," "Beverly Hills Cop II," "Spy Game," "Unstoppable" and "Crimson Tide," a submarine thriller starring Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington.
He started his career under his brother's patronage in the early 1970s and directed thousands of television commercials for his brother's company Ridley Scott Associates.
A prolific filmmaker, Scott had more that 30 new projects in the pipeline, including "Top Gun 2," a sequel to the original movie, where Tom Cruise was again expected to play the lead role.
Scott was married to his third wife, actress Donna Scott. The couple had twin sons.

No, I am not.
Perhaps I am planning a makeover for myself...yes...I need to eat better, move more, be kinder to myself, la la la.
What I wanted to discuss today is extreme parenting in general.
Now I will start by saying - as I always do - that to each their own. As long as parents are not hurting their children or anyone else, there are many different parenting styles out there and depending on the family - there are many styles that work well. They are not all for me...but that does not mean I don't have full respect for many of the choices other people make.
Someone recently told me that they look at parenting the same way as they look at religion. "Whatever works for you." This really resonated with me. If you are a Mormon, for example, great! Again, not for me...but if that works for you, then grand.
I am going to share my opinion of one...and you can take it or leave it. I expect there will be people on both sides...and that is fine. How I choose to raise my boys is my choice...not yours...and I don't expect you all to agree.
Personally, I don't believe in extremes.
I am turned off by them. In my opinion, extremists - be them feminists, religious leaders, athletes, whatever...I just don't think swaying too far to one side and holding on for dear life is healthy.
I find it closed-minded.
I think in any situation, there needs to be wiggle room to explore different options; ones that may not fit into the mould laid out by whatever philosophy you subscribe to.
I especially feel this way when it comes to parenting.
Let's take food and nutrition as an example here.
I, like many a parent, believe that feeding my children balanced meals full of nutrition and goodness is very important. So does my husband. We feel it is important for ourselves as well...but as parents, we understand that we need to install proper eating habits in our boys and we do our best to do that.
But we don't go to extremes.
What I mean here, is that very little is forbidden.
We do not insist that our children not eat refined sugar or packaged food or McDonald's.
We do insist that they do not eat these things the majority of the time...but nothing in our home is 100% off limits. (OK, perhaps alcohol...but that is a little different.)
I do know some parents who do not let their children eat certain things. They subscribe to a pretty rigid view on healthy eating and go to great lengths to make sure every last item that goes into their kids' systems is of the utmost quality. And hey...I am not here to judge. I just don't agree with it.
In my humble, little opinion, the more you restrict children, the more they will want to rebel at some point. Forbidden fruit is very tempting...much more so than stuff they have tried before.
My older boys understand that fast food is crap. But they eat it sometimes. We all do. We talk to them about what we are eating. They know it is a "treat" but also know that really it is not a "treat" for their bodies.
Now, they tend to order salads instead of fries. They would rather have a home-cooked meal rather than fast food. Give them a choice between a hamburger and fries from Wendy's or chicken, pasta with Nonna's sauce made from tomatoes from her garden and a salad made from other pickings from the same place and they will go for the good stuff.
Because they know the difference. They know the difference in taste. The know the difference in terms of what is better for them nutritionally. They get that if they want to be strong and healthy, they need to eat the good stuff.
And they understand that if they want to be athletes...and they are...but if they want to go further with their hockey and what have you...they need to eat like athletes. And they know that Sidney Crosby probably does not have a bacon-double-cheeseburger before a game.
Same goes for things like religion.
While my children are Catholic, I am not - and I don't believe in some of the strict rules or dogma or whatever you want to call it that comes with much of organized religions...Catholic or otherwise.
I don't want my kids to "fear God". I want them to love God. I want them to understand that just because the bible says something, it is not the end-all and be-all.
The bottom line is that I am raising my boys to learn to be able to think for themselves.
Sure, as parents we need to plant the seeds. But they our kids will grow and so will their minds. I want them to be able to look at all the options available to them and make their own, educated, thoughtful decisions. Not because "I said so" or "the bible told me so" or la la la.
What do you think? I would love to hear your thoughts on all of this. Please comment below and let's get a discussion going!
Now all of this being said...maybe I should start giving my boys beer now?
Smiles,
Lora

The Drought-stricken corn grows in Missouri Valley, Iowa. Corn prices have soared to record highs.
By John W. Schoen, NBC News
Though severe drought conditions have raised the cost of food this summer, consumers may have seen the worst of the price impact at the grocery store.
Higher food prices helped lift the closely watched Producer Price Index by 0.3 percent in July, the fastest pace in five months. At the same time retail sales rose 0.8 percent, the first increase in four months and well ahead of expectations, signaling that the sluggish economy may be picking up momentum.
The increase in producer prices was driven in part by a jump in light truck prices, up 1.6 percent, and pharmaceuticals, up 0.9 percent.?At the grocery store, wholesale prices rose a sharp 0.5 percent in July, on top of the same price rise in June. Over half that jump resulted from higher prices for beef and veal, which climbed 3.8 percent, according to the government.
But with livestock producers facing steep increases in the cost of feed grains, the rise in meat prices may soon reverse course, according to Michelle Girard, an?economist at RBS.
See our full drought coverage here. And on Wednesday, Aug. 15, watch NBC News, CNBC, MSNBC, The Weather Channel and Telemundo for daylong, network-wide coverage of the drought.?Because it's so much more expensive to keep them and feed them, you may actually get more cattle being brought to slaughter, so beef prices may actually in the very near term have downward pressure," she said.
To help slow that price drop, and cushion the drought's impact on livestock producers, the White House announced Monday that the federal government will buy $170 million of meat and poultry. The increased demand generated by the government will help offset the expected glut of supply as livestock producers rush their herds to slaughter to avoid spiking feed costs.?
Corn and soy harvest forecasts were slashed last week after the worst drought in 50 years destroyed millions of acres of crops. Corn prices last week hit record levels of nearly $9 a bushel. Wheat and soybeans also hit multiyear highs.
But those spikes are expected to ease as demand eases, beginning with those livestock producers who are trimming herds. Ethanol producers facing soaring corn prices have also scaled back production. ?
Rising crop prices have also spurred foreign plantings in recent years, which may blunt the impact of this year?s shortfall in the U.S.,?according to a recent report on the drought's economic impact from the Federal Reserve Bank of?Kansas City. Since 2003, for example, the former Soviet Union has added 48 million acres of crop production and South American nations have planted an additional 42 million acres, according to the report.
?High prices could entice further expansions in global production that could lead to lower prices,? the report said. ?The best cure for high prices might be high prices.?
U.S. consumers will also be shielded from the recent sharp spikes in grain prices because the cost of those raw materials make up a?relatively?small share of the overall price of finished food products. Commodities like corn and wheat make up roughly 14 percent of the retail cost of food, according to the USDA. The rest of the price posted on the supermarket shelf represents processing, packaging, shipping, marketing and other production costs. ? ?
The Kansas City Fed report estimates this year?s drought could add about 4 percent to retail food prices next year. Since the cost of food makes up about 14 percent of the Consumer Price Index, the drought would contribute just 0.6 percent to overall inflation, according to the Kansas City Fed economists.
Consumers facing higher food prices are also getting some relief from a recent fallback in gasoline prices. Energy prices fell 0.4 percent in July for the fifth month in a row, according to the government?s inflation report. Wholesale gasoline prices fell 3.1 percent last month.
The summer surge in corn prices has sparked calls for a waiver of the government?s mandates and subsidies promoting corn-based ethanol. Some 40 percent of the U.S. corn crop is diverted to produce the gasoline additive, which raises fuel octane and lowers air pollution.
But a waiver of those mandates appears unlikely ? largely because refiners would be hard-pressed to cope with a shortfall in ethanol production.?
?Our gasoline logistics and distribution system is so entrenched with ethanol that we need it and very difficult for the refining system to change," said Andy Lipow, president of Lipow Oil Associates.
With no end in sight to the parched conditions, areas and businesses hardest hit by drought are already feeling the economic impact. But overall losses in the farm belt are expected to be reduced by the widespread use of federal farm insurance, which covers farmer?s losses from crop failures.
So the overall economic impact of this summer?s crop shortfall is expected to knock less than a tenth of a percent off gross domestic product, according to Paul Dales, economist at Capital Economics.
?This is clearly not a disaster for the total economy, but when growth is just 2 percent every little bit counts,? he said.
CNBC's Rick Santelli breaks down the latest numbers on retail sales and producer prices, with Beth Ann Bovino, S&P deputy chief economist.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Evelyn Lozada says Chad Johnson "needs help."
The reality star issued her first statement Tuesday since the football star's arrest for allegedly head-butting her. The altercation took place in the Miami area Saturday.
Lozada says she's "deeply disappointed" that her estranged husband hasn't taken responsibility for his actions. She says he made false accusations against her: Johnson told police she head-butted him.
Lozada says she hopes that by taking a stand, she will encourage other women to "break their silence" on the issue of domestic violence.
The two were married a little over a month ago and their nuptials were to be part of the VH1 reality show "Ev & Ocho" ? but it's now been shelved.
Johnson was cut from the Miami Dolphins the day after his arrest.

The process gives new meaning to the term "fine print"
We hope you're ready for that new inkjet you just bought to look positively prehistoric. That's because a team of researchers in Singapore has managed to build a printer that can create detailed color images a mere 50 micrometers across, the width of a single human hair.
Built by the Agency for Science, Technology, and Research (ASTAR), the nano-printer works at a resolution of 100,000 dots per inch (most magazines, by comparison, are printed at 300 dots per inch). Each of the dots it prints is actually made from four tiny pillars of nano-particles, each capped with silver and gold nano-disks. Changing the distance between these dots alters how they reflect light, which produces different colors without having to use pigment like traditional printers.
According to ASTAR's researchers, the resolution they've achieved is at the limit of what can be discerned by human vision, and going any smaller would simply result in indecipherable smudges. You know, the kind you get from those old-timey ink printers.

As you speed along the ship?s top-deck raft ride, waves break at the ocean?s surface 150 feet below. It?s an acrophobe?s nightmare?and could be the most thrilling moment of your next cruise vacation.
We?ve come a long way in the century since the?Titanic, when that ship?s heated swimming pool was a mind-boggling luxury. Now it?s AquaDuck, the cruise industry?s first water coaster, that?s making a splash on board the?Disney Dream?and?Disney Fantasy. From within the raft ride?s clear acrylic aerial flume (which extends 12 feet over the side of the ship), you?ll experience that heady ocean view.
Slideshow: See where the loopiest, crowd-pleasing waterslides are around the globe
It takes pluck to stare down the AquaDuck and the rest of the world?s craziest, record-breaking waterslides. Some, like Brazil?s 135-foot-high Insano, are traditional body slides, while others??resemble intricate roller coasters and showcase innovation in waterslide technology and design. Case in point: Italy?s new Divertical, which features a unique elevator lift system and speeds more than 65 miles per hour.
Like the Divertical, which is also now the world?s tallest waterslide at 197 feet, many of the craziest rides have set new records. Title of longest slide now goes to Mammoth at Indiana?s Holiday World and Splashin? Safari, where six-person rafts are propelled up and down hills across three acres?and partially in the dark.
Then there are the aquatic attractions making waves for their aesthetic appeal. Consider the slide that cascades down a replica of a Mayan temple at the Atlantis resort or Beijing?s colorful RideHouse, with its corkscrews, climb nets and other quirky design elements. It was customized for the Happy Magic Water Cube Waterpark, a new use for the Water Cube, one of the most iconic venues at the Beijing 2008 Olympics.
?This level of theming is relatively new to the water park industry, and what we did with RideHouse was groundbreaking when we put it in the Water Cube,? says Brad Goodbody of ProSlide.
The lavish theatrics of China?s water parks have earned them praise?and patrons. Guangzhou?s Chimelong Water Park entertained nearly 2 million visitors in 2011, making it the second most popular water park in the world (Disney?s Typhoon Lagoon takes the top spot).

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) ? The state attorney general's office urged a key official on Friday to dismiss a $150 million claim filed by a woman who was mauled and disfigured by a chimpanzee that went to berserk in 2009.
But the victim, who has amassed millions of dollars in medical and other bills, said she's holding out hope the claims commissioner will ultimately grant her permission to sue the state's Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, which she holds responsible for not seizing the animal despite a state biologist's warning it was dangerous.
"I hope and pray that the commissioner will give me my day in court," Charla Nash told reporters following the hearing. "And I also pray that I hope this never happens to anyone else again. It is not nice."
Nash, 57, was attacked in February 2009 by a friend's 200-pound pet chimpanzee after its owner asked Nash to help lure it back into her house in Stamford, Conn. The animal, named Travis, ripped off Nash's nose, lips, eyelids and hands before being shot to death by police.
Nash was blinded in the attack. She underwent a face and double hand transplant in 2011, but the hands failed to thrive because of complications and were removed. She said Friday she still hopes to get a double hand transplant.
Assistant Attorney General Maite Barainca told Claims Commissioner J. Paul Vance Jr. that Nash deserves sympathy for her plight and admiration for the courage she has shown in handling it, but argued that the state should not be held liable for actions of the privately owned animal.
"There is no claim that the state directly caused Ms. Nash's injuries. The state did not own or possess the chimp that attacked her" and played no role in letting the chimp loose that day in 2009 on private property, said Barainca.
Charles Willinger, Nash's attorney, said his client lives in a nursing home outside Boston "in total darkness," ''without eyes, without hands." He said she is "permanently scarred, emotionally, physically" and will never be able to see her daughter again or hold her hand. He said Nash "endures loneliness, despair and suffering beyond anyone's comprehension in this room," and urged Vance to be the "conscience of this state" when deciding whether to allow her to sue.
Nash told described her feelings of loneliness to reporters.
"I miss home," said Nash, who wore sunglasses and a turquoise top, and was accompanied by her brother Steve. "You know, when you're in a facility, you're alone. It's hard. But I'm thankful that I'm still here."
Vance is expected to issue a decision on the state's motion to dismiss the case within 30 days. If he rules in favor of the state, Nash cannot proceed with a hearing on the merits of her claim. She could, however, appeal to the General Assembly and ask state legislators to overrule the commissioner's decision.
If, however, Vance denies the state's motion to dismiss, a trial-like hearing will be held before him. Vance would then have to decide whether to allow Nash to sue the DEEP in superior court.
Willinger contends that Travis the chimp had been on the state agency's radar since 2003, when it escaped from its owner and ran loose in Stamford. It was the only chimpanzee in the state and was commonly referred to as "the gorilla in Stamford."
State officials have contended they did not have the authority to seize the animal.
Several months before the attack, a state biologist warned state officials in a memo that the chimpanzee could seriously hurt someone if it felt threatened, saying "it is an accident waiting to happen."
In October 2008, the biologist warned that the chimpanzee had reached adult maturity and "is very large and tremendously strong." The biologist said, "I am concerned that if he feels threatened or if someone enters his territory, he could seriously hurt someone."
